Akron Marathon Enhances Security in Preparation for 11th Annual Events
Akron, OH (September 24, 2013) – In an effort to ensure safe, secure and
enjoyable events for participants, volunteers and spectators, the Akron
Marathon has enhanced the security plan for its 11th annual events which
will take place on Friday, September 27, and Saturday, September 28, 2013.
"Over the years, we have assembled a unified front consisting of Akron
Police and Fire personnel, local, state and federal law enforcement,
medical staff and volunteers," said Michael Clar, Akron Marathon safety
officer. "Every year new challenges arise and we continually look for ways
to enhance our security plan."
Although numerous precautions are taken each year to protect those present
for race weekend, the Akron Marathon has made enhancements for 2013.
These include:
Backpacks are highly discouraged and all bags are subject to search in all
race areas along the course.
The provided clear FedEx Custom Critical Gear Bags will be the only bags
collected at Gear Check.
The Start Line and Finish Line will have athlete only areas.
Non-participants will not be permitted in these areas which include the
Start Line corrals and the Finisher Festival at the Finish Line.
There will be no family run-in at the finish line. Only athletes are
permitted on the race course, including crossing the Finish Line.
Marathon organizers and Summit County Emergency Management officials have
been preparing security for the events based on programs such as the
National Incident Management System and Incident Command System, which
provide a roadmap to help organizers and first responders of events
anticipate problems, prevent incidents and take a multidisciplinary
approach if problems arise.
The security committee includes representatives from Summit County
Emergency Management Agency, Summa Health System, Summit County Sheriff’s
Office, FBI / Homeland Security, Akron Police, Akron Fire / EMS and the
Ohio State Patrol.
Enhanced security plans have been communicated with race participants
through final instructions and emails, and signage will be available at
race venues.
