Novant Health Thunder Road Marathon Honors Charlotte with New Name
Rebranding receives praise from Charlotte Mayor and CRVA
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jan. 15, 2016 – Charlotte's hometown marathon is getting
a new name. The Novant Health Thunder Road Marathon has officially changed
its name to the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon. Now in its 12th year, the
race will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016.
"We have always been proud to be Charlotte's marathon, and what better way
to honor our hometown race than by naming it after our great city," said
Tim Rhodes, race director of the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon.
The new tagline: "Our Streets. Our City. Our Marathon. #runcharlotte" was
created to reflect that the event belongs to the Charlotte community. The
Marathon course covers 26.2 miles of city streets through several prominent
neighborhoods including: Uptown Charlotte, Dilworth, Myers Park, SouthEnd,
NoDa, Plaza Midwood and Elizabeth.
"Renaming the marathon on our city's behalf is a tremendous honor for
Charlotte, our community and our region," said Charlotte Mayor Jennifer
Roberts.
"The Novant Health Charlotte Marathon has long been an event that the city
is proud to host," says Tom Murray, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors
Authority (CRVA). "We know events such as these are a draw not only for the
residents who live here, but also for visitors looking for dynamic
communities offering memorable race experiences. The visitation from the
runners and their friends and family who come to cheer them on helps to
create substantial economic impact for our community."
Featuring a marathon, half-marathon, 5K run/walk, marathon relay and a kids
1 mile fun run, the event draws participants from around the United States.
There are opportunities to run, walk, volunteer and cheer. The Novant
Health Charlotte Marathon – which has a six-hour course time limit – is a
Boston Marathon qualifier (course certification is NC15107DF). Registration
is open and people can sign up at www.runcharlotte.com.
