Kimutai Cheruiyot Wins 2014 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon
Sara Hall Sets 28-Second Half Marathon Personal Record
DALLAS (Dec. 14, 2014) - Kimutai Cheruiyot of Kenya pulled away from James
Kirwa in a close race on a breezy race morning to win the 44th running of
the MetroPCS Dallas Marathon in a time of 2:17:11. Stephen Muange and
Jonathan Kibet sprinted out the final 100 yards in a battle for third
place, with Muange narrowly edging Kibet.
Shitaye Gemechu of Ethiopia won the women's 2014 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon
with a time of 2:46:46. Jessica Harper, a 22-year-old first-time
marathoner, and Liza Galvan, the 2004 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon champion,
finished in second and third places with times of 2:50:14 and 2:53:20,
respectively.
Cheruiyot and Gemechu will each receive $5,000 for winning the 2014
MetroPCS Dallas Marathon.
Half Marathon
Elite competitor Sara Hall led all women in the 2014 MetroPCS Half
Marathon, cruising to her fourth half marathon victory in four months with
a time of 1:12:26. The 2012 U.S. Cross Country Champion and three-time
Olympic Trials finalist beat her personal best by 28 seconds. Husband and
two-time U.S. Olympic marathoner and owner of the best-ever American time
in the marathon, Ryan Hall, paced her after finishing his leg of the
Behringer Relay.
Logan Sherman of Dallas won the men's 2014 MetroPCS Half Marathon with a
time of 1:08:20.
Deena Kastor, a MetroPCS Dallas Marathon elite ambassador and the U.S.
record holder in the women's marathon and half marathon, paced 18-year-old
high school senior Nick Figueroa for a full 13.1 miles, as Figueroa
completed his second half marathon ever in a time of 1:26:49. Figueroa
participates in Matthew McConaughey's just keep livin Foundation.
Mark Followill, play-by-play announcer for the Dallas Mavericks, served as
the 2014 Cotton Patch Café Last Man Running adding excitement to the half
marathon race and raising additional funds for the marathon's primary
beneficiary, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Followill started
at the very back of the last corral as the last runner to cross the start
line and ultimately passed 6,594 runners en route to a 1:46:44 half
marathon finish.
Behringer Relay
Celebrity runners Meb Keflezighi and Ryan Hall teamed up with the Dallas
Mavericks and Texas Rangers, respectively, for a friendly competition in
the 2014 Behringer Relay. Meb and Hall ran the first leg of the five-person
relay teams comprised of three staff members from the Dallas Mavericks or
Texas Rangers, and one fan selected by each organization. The Texas Rangers
team finished with a time of 3:01:39, beating the Dallas Mavericks team who
finished with a time of 3:10:19. A charitable donation will be made to the
Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation for the victory.
The overall winner in the 2014 Behringer Relay was Team Luke's with a time
of 2:30:40. The Behringer Relay follows the same 26.2-mile course as the
MetroPCS Dallas Marathon.
The High School Relay Team, comprised of 16 of the area's top high school
distance runners, came up short in their challenge against the elite
marathon field, finishing with a collective time of 2:25:58. Overall
marathon champion Kimutai Cheruiyot will receive a $1,500 prize bonus for
fending off the high school relay team.
The 2014 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon, Half Marathon and Behringer Relay
featured a new race course designed to improve the runner experience and
create fun, accessible moments for spectators. Thousands of cheering fans
lined the streets of Dallas to cheer on race participants.
The 2015 event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015. Following are
