DALLAS (Dec. 13, 2015) – The elite field in the Duo to Rio Relay sponsored
by AT&T at the 2015 Dallas Marathon featured five pairs of Olympic Trials
qualifying athletes, competing head-to-head to see which duo of runners
could complete the fastest two-person marathon relay. Sam Chelanga opened
an early lead, running a 1:03:47 split in his 13.1-mile relay leg before
handing off to teammate Molly Huddle. Experience won out, as the pair of
Abdi Abdirahman, a four-time Team USA Olympian, and three-time Olympian
Deena Kastor were the first duo to cross the Dallas Marathon finish line in
a time of 2:19:49. Race officials believe Kastor and Abdirahman’s finish
time signifies the fastest two-person marathon relay ever recorded. The
five male participants, who ran the first 13.1 miles, stayed closely
together. Kastor and Dallas-born Becky Wade pulled ahead from the field as
the Duo to Rio Relay sponsored by AT&T competitors made their way towards a
downtown finish, with Kastor sprinting ahead for the finish tape in the
last half mile.

Dallas Marathon
Logan Sherman of Dallas, Texas, led practically the entire 26 miles en
route to his first marathon victory at the Dallas Marathon. The 2014 Dallas
Half Marathon champion battled windy conditions and rain during the first
few miles, before opening up a sizable lead on the field at the 45th
running of the Dallas Marathon. Sherman averaged 5:38 per mile, with a
winning time of 2:27:28. Ryan Siler and Luis Rojas pushed on the last
stretch of the course finishing only a minute apart in the battle for
second with Siler (2:43:57) outpacing Rojas (2:44:13).
Jamie Vest won the women’s 2015 Dallas Marathon with a time of 2:58:31.
Vest waited for her training partner and good friend at the finish line,
Sara Ibbetson, who finished second with a time of 3:01:54. Finishing third
was Christine Kennedy, a 60-year old marathoner.
Rio King, 72, extended his streak of most consecutive Dallas Marathons
completed, finishing his 40th consecutive – and 42nd overall – Dallas
Marathon in a time of 4:49:00.
Dallas Half Marathon
First to cross the finish line for the day was Gabe Proctor, who trains
with Mammoth Track Club, with a time of 1:05:09. Proctor saw the Dallas
Half Marathon as an ideal tune up race in advance of competing in the 2016
Olympic Trials in Los Angeles. Local runner Dawn Grunnagle, and Olympic
Trials qualifier in the marathon, won the Dallas Half Marathon for the
women in a time of 1:19:29.
Behringer Relay
The overall winner in the 2015 Behringer Relay was Park Cities XC Youth
team with a time of 2:33:09. The five-person Behringer Relay follows the
same 26.2-mile course as the Dallas Marathon.
Columbia Business School Executive Challenge
New at the 2015 Dallas Marathon was the Columbia Business School Executive
Challenge, crowning the fastest c-suite executive or business leader
competing in the marathon. The winner of the 2015 Columbia Business School
Executive Challenge was Matthew Crownover, CEO of Identification Plates
Inc., in a time of 2:57:14.
Pro Relay Challenge
For the first time, the Dallas Marathon had all five North Texas
professional sports teams participate in a friendly competition on race
day. The Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers and
FC Dallas five-person relay teams, and one Andrews Distributing relay team
were joined by one elite runner each, with the winning sports team earning
a donation for its foundation, as well as a donation to the race’s primary
beneficiary, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC). FC Dallas’
team, which featured elite middle distance American runner Ryan Hill
running the first leg, won in 2:55:07.
Oscar Last Men Running
Oscar Last Men Running featured five Dallas-based personalities racing to
try and pass as many runners as possible to raise funds for TSRHC. The
team, including 2014 Last Man Running and voice of the Dallas Mavericks
Mark Followill, KRLD’s Michael Scott, KSCS’ Mark “Hawkeye” Louis, and The
Ticket’s Corby Davidson and Craig “Junior” Miller (Last Man Running in
2012), passed 3,128 runners along their way to a 3:22:11 finish. The
five-person Oscar Last Men Running relay team followed the same race course
as the marathon and Behringer Relay participants.
