         Kenyan holds out Aussie flyer in women's Gold Coast Marathon
 
Kenyan Rodah Jepkorir (KEN) held off a strong finishing burst from 
Tasmanian Milly Clark (AUS/TAS) to take out the women's Gold Coast 
Marathon.

The 27-year-old broke away from the 30km mark and then lasted to break the 
tape in 2:27:56, with Clark second (2:28:08) and Eritrea's Nazret Weldu 
(ERI) third in 2:28:57.

The women's marathon field battled a variety of conditions, from heavy rain 
to brilliant Gold Coast sunshine.

Jepkorir was in the lead pack from the start, passing through the 5km mark 
in Surfers Paradise in 17:12 with Weldu through in 17:13 and Clark back in 
17:59.

By the time the runners had reached the 30km Jepkorir had snuck a 
three-second break on Weldu, while Clark was a further two minutes and five 
seconds back.

However the Aussie was beginning her blistering run home. At the 35km aid 
station Clark was one minute 31 seconds behind the leader, but still in 
third place.

At 40km Clark was comfortably in second place and 38 seconds from the lead. 
She continued to close to finally be just 12 seconds from Jepkorir at the 
tape.

Clark certainly ticked the boxes she was targeting on the Gold Coast. 
Primarily she wanted to enjoy the event. She achieved that.

She was also hoping for a PB (which was 2:29:07), to run a time lower than 
the Tokyo Olympics qualifier (2:29:30) and to finish on the podium. With 
her time at 2:28:08, she ticked every box.

Clark is no stranger to the Gold Coast Marathon weekend of events. In 2013 
she was second in the Southern Cross University 10km Run. The following 
year she stepped up to the ASICS Half Marathon and won.

She placed sixth in the half in 2015 and was second in that same event in 
2017.

Clark took the Oceania Championship honours with fellow Aussies Nera Jareb 
second and Tennille Ellis third.

- Tennille Ellis: ADF Championships - Jennifer Pearsall (Air Force); 
Australian (and Qld) Masters Championships - Nerissa O'Donnell.

top three and I did both so I'm super stoked."

of running alone and slugging it out on the roads, you can use the crowd. 
It gives you that extra burst."
