LAKE TAHOE MARATHON ADDS TRIATHLON TO AGENDA
South Lake Tahoe, California — The grandeur of the country’s largest alpine
lake can not only be taken in on foot this year, but can also be taken in
on the water and by bike. The Lake Tahoe Marathon recently announced the
addition of its first-ever, 3-day triathlon.
"This triathlon was designed so that novice athletes could try different
events in three days instead of one," says Les Wright, Lake Tahoe Marathon
race director. "The three days set for the event will include kayaking or
swimming, biking and running."
The triathlon is set to start Thursday, October 9 with a 6 or 9-mile kayak
or one-mile swim starting at Zephyr Cove in Nevada. On Friday, October 10,
athletes will compete in the timed, 72-mile bike ride around the lake and
will then join the marathoners Saturday, October 11 for the 26.2 mile run,
starting at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, California heading down the West
Shore to the finish line in South Lake Tahoe. There is a $500 purse for
both the male and female winner of this event.
Considered to be one of the nation’s most beautiful runs, the Lake Tahoe
Marathon attracts world-class and recreational athletes alike. This year’s
event is expected to draw approximately 3,000 male and female runners and
up to 3,500 spectators throughout race week. Last year, approximately 2,800
racers participated. Unlike other marathons, here the first man or woman to
cross the finish line wins $1,000, with the women getting a 27-minute head
start. These winning athletes are compensated for housing and free entry
for life in future Lake Tahoe Marathon races.
