Eleven Local Running Stores Vied For Top Honor at
38th Marine Corps Marathon
QUANTICO, VA (Dec. 5, 2013) - The Potomac River Running Store of Arlington,
VA, has claimed victory in the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Running Store
Team Competition. Eleven running specialty stores from Maryland, Virginia
and Washington, D.C. organized teams of at least three runners who
participated in the 38th MCM on Sunday, Oct. 27.
Potomac River Running of Arlington finished in first place with a combined
time of 8:42:53. Runners contributing to the winning time were Dustin
Whitlow (2:46:10) of Washington, D.C., who also placed 72nd overall in the
men's field. He was followed closely by fellow team member Ryan Johnson
(2:47:10) of Silver Spring, MD, who ranked 78th among male finishers.
Rounding out the team for the ladies was Deedee Loughran (3:09:33) of
Reston, VA, who placed 439th in the MCM women's field.
"We are very proud of our racing team," said Ray Pugsley, owner of Potomac
River Running. "This year's success is especially striking because the
winning team isn't comprised of the 'youngest' folks in our group. Team
spirit was more apparent than ever."
Team scores were calculated by combining the individual times of the top
three finishers, including at least one male and one female. All scores
were based on individual runner chip times.
Nearly half of the MCM race field is comprised of runners from the greater
Washington, D.C. area according to Rick Nealis, MCM Director. "Local
running stores are valuable assets to area MCM runners for gear and advice,
and the MCM is happy to host the Running Store Team Competition to
highlight the key role these stores play in assisting runners in their
journey to the finish line."
The MCM will present a special plaque recognizing the Potomac River Running
of Arlington team victory at a ceremony to be hosted at the store in early
2014.
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is the third largest marathon in the United
States and voted "Best Marathon in the Mid Atlantic" and "Best Marathon for
Charities." The MCM honors the dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism of
its participants. Also known as "The People's Marathon," runners from all
walks of life participate in the MCM, which is the largest marathon not to
