'The People's Marathon' in Nation's Capital
QUANTICO, VA (July 18, 2014) - The U.S. Marines will attest that it takes
more than a "few good men and women" to host the world-class marathon in
the nation's capital and Arlington, VA during the four-day extravaganza
that is Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Weekend. The MCM has opened its
volunteer program to the public enabling thousands of individuals and
groups to serve between Thursday, Oct. 23 and Marathon Day, Sunday, Oct.
26. Volunteers can register at www.marinemarathon.com for a wide variety of
support duties alongside U.S. Marines.
"As any Marine knows, it takes teamwork to complete the mission," says MCM
Director Rick Nealis. "With the assistance of thousands of volunteers, the
MCM has earned its reputation as one of the most organized and most
gratifying marathons in the world."
MCM volunteers can register for responsibilities throughout MCM Weekend
including Packet Pick-up, baggage, information, clothing collection and
recycling and in a variety of duty stations. These areas include the Health
& Fitness Expo by GE, the MCM Kids Run, MCM10K, Runners Village, MCM Finish
Festival and water points and food stations located along the Marathon and
MCM10K course. There also are positions available for volunteers with
professional skills such as HAM operators, massage therapists and those
with certified medical training including EMTs, nurses and doctors.
By selecting "group registration," members of community organizations can
register larger numbers of volunteers to work together during MCM events.
Several groups return to volunteer at the MCM each year, including Boy
Scout and Girl Scout Troops, Arlington County, the Junior League of
Washington, numerous charity groups and employees of Navy Federal Credit
Union, UPS and Walmart.
MCM volunteers each receive a commemorative T-shirt and volunteer
certificate. Teens requiring community volunteer hours for high school or
college also benefit from registering to help out during MCM Weekend.
Once volunteers are registered, they will be emailed further details about
their position and its requirements, as well as event information including
maps, parking etc.
The 39th MCM begins in Arlington, VA and runs throughout the nation's
capital, finishing at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, VA.
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is the third largest marathon in the United
States and eighth in the world and is voted "Best Marathon in the Mid
Atlantic" and "Best Marathon for Charities." The MCM honors the dedication,
sportsmanship and patriotism of its participants. Also known as "The
People's Marathon," runners from all walks of life participate in the MCM,
the largest marathon not to offer prize money. The 39th MCM sponsored by
Arlington County, Brooks and GE, will be held on October 26, 2014 in
Arlington, VA. No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
