Arlington County Approves Street Naming of Marine Corps Marathon Drive
QUANTICO, VA (July 22, 2015) - In a unanimous vote, the Arlington County
Board officially designated Marine Corps Marathon Drive, to be located
along a portion of Wilson Boulevard, from North Lynn Street to North Moore
Street, "to inspire and motivate the thousands who will converge on
Arlington," the resolution states. Runners will cross Marine Corps Marathon
Drive in Mile 1 of the course and then return to the street as part of the
MCM Finish Festival.
The annual naming of Marine Corps Marathon Drive will occur through the
month of October. County officials voted on the street naming resolution in
Board chambers on July 21.
Thousands of participants from around the world will take part in the 40th
MCM on Oct. 25, which starts and ends in Arlington County, VA. The MCM,
known as "The People's Marathon," annually registers 30,000 for the 26.2
mile event that begins on Route 110 in Arlington, between Arlington
National Cemetery and the Pentagon. The MCM then runs throughout the
nation's capital and finishes at the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial in
Rosslyn, VA, also located in Arlington County.
"Since 2006, the MCM has enjoyed a robust partnership with Arlington
working closely with the County's business improvement districts,
neighborhoods, tourism department, transportation, law enforcement,
environmental services and community officials," says MCM Director Rick
Nealis. "Arlington is the home of the start and finish of 'The People's
Marathon' with thousands of runners and spectators enjoying all of the
benefits the County has to offer. As MCM will celebrate its 40th
anniversary in October, those who live and work in Arlington will
appreciate their role in this international event."
"Every October during the MCM, the runners own the streets in Arlington,"
says Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hynes. "This ceremonial designation
acknowledges the drive and determination it takes for each runner to make
it to the Arlington-based start and celebrate their accomplishment at the
Marine Corps War Memorial finish."
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is voted "Best Marathon" and "Best Marathon
for Spectators." The MCM honors the dedication, sportsmanship and
patriotism of its participants. Also known as "The People's Marathon,"
runners from all walks of life participate in the MCM, the largest marathon
not to offer prize money. The 40th MCM, on October 25, 2015 in Arlington,
VA, is sponsored by Arlington County, Brooks, GEICO and Hyundai. No federal
or Marine Corps endorsement is implied. #RunWithTheMarines
