MCM Earns Gold Level Certification
from the Council for Responsible Sport
2019 Marine Corps Marathon Recognized for Social and Environmental
Initiatives
Certified_GoldQUANTICO, VA (April 13, 2020) - The Marine Corps Marathon
(MCM) has earned Gold Level Certification from the Council for Responsible
Sport, an organization that independently verifies the socially and
environmentally responsible work by sports events.
This is the second time the MCM has earned gold certification. Previously,
the MCM earned Silver Level certification in 2009 and again in 2011, and
first earned gold in 2014.
In conjunction with Arlington County's Economic and Development Agency and
various other partners including sponsors Fyffes, Rosslyn Business
Improvement District and Wegmans, the MCM Organization implemented a
comprehensive waste reduction system while planning for the 2019 MCM
Weekend. The three-day event generated 53 tons of waste, 54.4% of which was
diverted out of landfills when:
- 2,500 pounds of banana and orange peels were composted
- 5,000 pounds of unused perishable food was collected by Move For Hunger
and donated to the Capital Foodbank
- 9 tons of plastic jugs and cardboard boxes were recycled
- 4,000 pounds of selected discarded clothing were cleaned and donated to
local homeless shelters and services
MCMO also partnered with the Washington Metro Transit Authority to provide
runners with an early opening to arrive on time to the start line and
encouraged all participants and spectators to take advantage of the free
shuttles to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
"We are honored to be recognized by the Council of Responsible Sport as a
Gold-level sustainable event for the second time," said Angela Anderson,
Deputy Director of the Marine Corps Marathon Organization. "The MCM
Organization and our entire running community, including sponsors and
partners, remain committed to ensuring we are continually improving our
sustainability efforts and encouraging practicing green behaviors at all of
our events."
The 45th MCM will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020 in Arlington, VA and
throughout the nation's capital.
