Marine Corps Marathon Announces Free Race Directors Workshop
on Saturday, October 25 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City
QUANTICO, VA (August 4, 2003)-The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), recognized
in the running industry for operational excellence, will present a free
two-hour workshop for race directors on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 7
a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. Pre-registration by phone is
required, as there is limited availability. Hosted by MCM Race Director
Rick Nealis, the workshop will cover industry issues including course
security, Hyponatremia and technology enhancements.
"Running events, especially marathons, have greatly changed since September
11," said Nealis. "The days of water and Vaseline, though still important,
are over shadowed by safety, runner's protection and ground control issues.
This is a forum to share those ideas and capitalize on them with other
event directors."
To register for the Race Directors workshop, please contact Captain Maria
Leonard at (703) 784-2225 ext. 307.
A representative of MCM presenting sponsor Cisco Systems will outline the
marathon's technological elements including chip timing, wireless
networking and IP telephony.
Workshop guests will be provided an opportunity to observe operations for
the Healthy Kids Fun Run, immediately following the workshop at 10 a.m. at
the Iwo Jima War Memorial. Transportation will be provided. Additionally,
attendees may browse the MCM Runners' Expo presented by Advanced PCS. Expo
hours are 4-8 p.m. on Thursday October 23; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday,
October 24; and 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at the Hyatt
Regency Crystal City.
