FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lucky #13 for the Mississauga Marathon
Mississauga, ON – From Mississauga, down to Hamilton, out to Ottawa and all
the way from Poland & Ethiopia, thousands of runners, walkers, fundraisers,
and spectators got together to participate in and celebrate a wonderful
weekend at the Mississauga Marathon. With 8,307 runners and walkers
registered, the 13th annual running of the event created memories that will
last a life time.
"We are ecstatic to see the continued and increased support from our city,
participants, sponsors, and spectators year after year." says Elliott Kerr,
Race Chairman and President of Landmark Sport Group, organizers of the
Mississauga Marathon. "We are proud to call Mississauga home and we love
being able to provide such a fun, competitive, and family-friendly event
every spring!"
The Mississauga Marathon proudly provides 'A Run for Everyone' with their
seven different races, covering five distances. The events range from the
42.2KM Full Marathon to the 2KM Fun Run/Walk. Part of the tremendous
success of the event has been its ability to attract participants with a
wide variety of athletic abilities. Casual participants are drawn in by the
overall festive atmosphere and family friendliness of Race Weekend. Elite
runners from around the world participate in the Mississauga Marathon in
order to set personal records by taking advantage of the net downhill
route, which is also a certified qualifying course for the prestigious
Boston Marathon.
"The 2016 Race Weekend provided a multitude of highlights" explained Ben
Lindover, Marketing Coordinator for the Mississauga Marathon. "We not only
launched a new marketing campaign, #RunThisCity, tailored around exposing
the beautiful city of Mississauga, but we also debuted a line-up of
stunning medals for all of our finishers. We really believe that our new
campaign helped us highlight the gorgeous aspects of Mississauga and
encouraged people from all over Ontario, Canada, and the World to come and
experience everything our wonderful city has to offer!"
On a competitive note, Ebisa Ejigu from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Megan
Kuikman from Minesing, Ontario were the big winners of Race Weekend,
completing the Full Marathon with times of 2.25.44.5 and 2.55.38.2,
respectively to take the men's and women's titles. Dozens of athletes were
awarded for placing within their respective age and gender categories at
each distance but every finisher received their own piece of hardware to
symbolize their personal achievement – the finisher's medal. A major round
of applause is to be extended to Ms. Julie Hambleton from Grimsby, Ontario
who set a new course record for the Novo Nordisk® "HAZEL" 5KM with a
blistering time of 17.24.7.
The success of the Mississauga Marathon could not have been accomplished
without the dedication of over 1,500 volunteers. From organizing shuttle
busses to handing out cups of water along the course, all of these
volunteers played a vital role in helping the 13th year of the Mississauga
Marathon be as successful as it was. Along with the volunteers, a warm and
special thank you must be extended to all spectators and cheer stations
that helped push the runners along the route towards the finish line.
For a fourth consecutive year, the Scotiabank Charity Challenge provided
race participants the opportunity to raise funds for one of the
twenty-seven local and national charities which partnered with the
Mississauga Marathon. Donations will continue to be collected until June
1st.
