FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City Announces Road Closures for the 2014 GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon Weekend, November 21-23
PHILADELPHIA (November 17 - November 21, 2014) - City of Philadelphia
officials would like to remind residents that streets will be closed in
many parts of the city in connection with the 21st annual GORE-TEX®
Philadelphia Marathon on the weekend of November 21-23. Delays can be
expected. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, avoid areas along
the race course, allow for extra driving time and proceed with extreme
caution during Race Weekend. Due to increased security in the Parkway area,
parking and traffic regulations will be strictly enforced. Officials urge
motorists to refrain from double-parking, which creates congestion, limits
traffic flow and is illegal.
Some of the major areas impacted include:
- The Benjamin Franklin Parkway Friday, November 21 through Sunday,
November 23
- Citywide along the 26.2-mile route of the Philadelphia Marathon
on Sunday, November 23
- The I-676 off-ramps at 22nd Street (westbound) and 23rd Street
(eastbound) will be closed on Sunday, November 23 after 4 a.m. for event
security preparation.
The inner drives of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed, from 9:30
a.m. until 3:30 p.m., on Friday, November 21. At 3:30 p.m., the westbound
lanes will be opened for the afternoon rush hour. At 6:30 p.m., the inner
lanes of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed continuously, from
6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 21 through the completion of Marathon Weekend
on Sunday, November 23, and will reopen on Sunday, November 23 at 6 p.m.
Street closures will be in effect -- from 4 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday,
November 22 - along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, from 18th Street to 25th
Street, and also on Martin Luther King Drive. Signage labeled "no parking"
will be posted in the Parkway area and elsewhere along the race course in
advance. On Sunday, the vicinity near 18th Street and the Parkway and the
Logan Circle area will be closed to vehicular traffic. Parking in the
Philadelphia Museum of Art area is very limited.
Due to enhanced security, City "no-parking" regulations will be enforced
strictly and all vehicles on the race route will be towed, beginning at 2
a.m. on Sunday, November 23. In addition, on Sunday, the Parkway, from 18th
to 25th streets, will be closed, from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other streets along
the race course will reopen as runners pass by and the streets are cleaned.
