Rivers Marathon, Inc. since 2008. As executive director, she successfully
helped re-launch the Pittsburgh Marathon after a 5-year hiatus. Since 2009,
the event has continued to grow from an organization with no sponsors, no
runners, no staff and no volunteers to an event that now supports 18 staff
members, 4,000 volunteers and 30,000+ runners. The event attracts runners
from all 50 states and more than 20 countries and has hosted world-class
athletes, including Olympians and U.S. champions.
Under Matamoros' leadership, Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. has
created several fitness initiatives and programs for the community. These
include the Steel City Road Runners, a running club with 1,000+ members;
Kids of STEEL, a nutrition and exercise kids program with involvement of
more than 100 schools and 6,000 children; and the Run for a Reason Program,
which has raised more than $6 million for national and local charities
since 2009. Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. also supports a
year-long calendar of races, including the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile and
EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler.
Patrice was named the 2013 Sportswoman of the Year by Dapper Dan Charities
of Pittsburgh, which is one of the oldest nonprofit and fundraising
community sports clubs dating back to 1936. She was chosen for her
