FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Increases
Course Time Limits for the First Time
Runners now have more time to enjoy a unique and scenic
tour of the Steel City
February 27, 2018
PITTSBURGH - This year's DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and UPMC
Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon courses will be identical to the 2017
routes. While the routes will look familiar, P3R is making another kind of
change that will impact both returning and new runners. The full marathon
course time limit will be increased from six to seven hours, and
half-marathon participants will now have three and a half hours to complete
the course. Runners will have to maintain a 16:00 minute per mile pace, up
two minutes from the previous 14:00 minute per mile rate.
According to Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO and Race Director, "Our race
weekend has become one of the fastest growing in the country over the past
ten years, and we're hoping this course time limit change will encourage
even more people to become a 'Runner of Steel' during our 10th Anniversary
year."
On Sunday, May 6, race participants will once again toe the start line on
Liberty Avenue between Smithfield Street and 10th Street. They will have
some extra time to cross all three of Pittsburgh's rivers, travel through
14 neighborhoods and pass by several Pittsburgh landmarks - including PNC
Park, Heinz Field and PPG Paints Arena - before finishing the race on the
Boulevard of the Allies between Wood Street and Market Street.
"Though construction plans often force us to make changes from year to
year, we're excited to once again offer a route that was a winner with
runners, spectators and city officials last year." said Dee Stathis, P3R
COO and Director of Marketing. "This course provides runners with a scenic
view of the Steel City, as well as an opportunity for thousands of
Pittsburghers to get involved with our city's largest community
celebration."
Click here to view last year's course map and turn-by-turn directions; the
only changes to the map and directions will be the date. Runners interested
in getting a sneak peak before race day can participate in a free course
preview training run on Saturday, April 7, hosted by the Steel City Road
Runners, the Pittsburgh area's largest running club.
