New book ranks Prague International Marathon among
"Great Marathon Races Throughout History"
The international community has been paying further tribute to the Prague
International Marathon (PIM). A new book by Italian authors Fausto
Narducci, Roberto Quarcetani and Massimo Magnani, entitled "Great Marathon
Races Throughout History", places Prague's best known mass participation
sport event among the world's top-10 Marathons, next to the likes of
Boston, New York, Berlin and London.
The well-documented publication examines in detail the Marathon movement on
a world scale, a "mass phenomenon, which involves organizing bodies and
travel agencies specially created for the occasion". The three co-authors
have selected 10 Marathons from all over the world that "have made the
history of the most popular discipline in athletics". They call these
events the "jewels in the Marathon crown, chosen on the basis of their
popularity and prestige from a packed annual calendar".Prague makes the
top-10 together with Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York,
Rotterdam/Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm and Tokyo. The book's chapters
contain detailed information on all races, maps, archive and contemporary
photo material as well as so-called organization secrets of success and
anecdotes. The book's Czech edition is expected to come out this spring.
"This latest [accolade] is something that only comes to confirm what we'd
already known" commented Carlo Capalbo, PIM's CEO. "PIM is a Czech sport
and social event with a unique international appeal". AIMS, the world body
for Marathon and Road Races, has already branded Prague International
Marathon as its "most international event" for its ability to attract a
unparalleled percentage of foreign visitors to its annual Running Circuit
events.
This percentage is expected to reach record figures of increase this year
as the numbers of entries in PIM's Running Circuit, the Half Marathon and
the Marathon by the first week in February, show an amazing increase of up
to 400 percent compared to the figures available from the same time in
2004. The Circuit's main attractions in 2005 include the Hervis Half
Marathon on April 2, the Marathon on May 22 and the Grand Prix on September
19 as well as a series of innovations that will make them more appealing to
the runners-to-be. The first thousand runners to register for either the
Half Marathon or the Marathon will enter for free. With the numbers rapidly
rising a lot of people might miss out but they can all make sure of a
specially reduced entry fee as well as dozens of other benefits by simply
joining PIM's newly founded Czech Marathon Club (CMK), a collective of
friends and dedicated runners of PIM and distance running.
