SEATTLE, Wash. (February 21, 2020) - The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series®, a
part of The IRONMAN Group, is excited to announce GRAMMY Award-winning
hip-hop artist Sir Mix-A-Lot as the headliner for the 2020 St. Jude Rock
'n' Roll® Seattle Marathon & 1/2 Marathon. On Sunday, June 7, Sir Mix-A-Lot
will close out the best-in-class running event by taking to the finish line
festival stage at Seattle Center as the Encore Entertainment to celebrate
the days accomplishments.
Prior to recording his renowned hit and GRAMMY-winning song "Baby Got Back"
in 1992, Sir Mix-A-Lot was a platinum selling artist with a strong
following in the hip-hop community. Best known for his danceable,
bass-heavy hip-hop sound, the Seattle native, MC and producer born Anthony
Ray, broke out with his first single in 1987 "Posse on Broadway," which
referred to a street in Seattle and became a local hit that paved the way
for his first LP. Coming from a place with little to no hip-hop presence,
he co-founded his own record label with his DJ, Nasty Nes, who also hosted
Seattle's first hip-hop radio show.
"We are incredibly excited to have Sir Mix-A-Lot bring his bass to our
finish line festival stage this summer at 2020 St. Jude Rock 'n' Roll
Seattle Marathon & 1/2 Marathon," said Dave Christen, Regional Director for
the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. "Having a GRAMMY-winning artist who was
born and raised in Seattle perform at one of our premier events is a truly
special opportunity that will provide runners with an incredible experience
and highlight the incredible musical talent that's produced here in the
Emerald City."
Taking place from Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, the musically
themed St. Jude Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon & 1/2 Marathon will offer
participants a tour like no other of the Emerald City's most famous
landmarks, including Downtown Seattle, Fremont, Queen Anne Hill, Kerry
Park, Woodland Park, and Green Lake.
The races will take off on Saturday, June 6 with the 5K presented by
Brooks, starting and finishing at the Museum of Flight for a flat, fast and
first-class run beneath rare and unique airplanes like the B-29
Superfortress, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, B-17 Flying Fortress, Air Force One
and more. Participants will receive a high-flying medal and free post-race
museum admission. Participants can also take on the "Remix Challenge" by
running Saturday and Sunday to earn the coveted Remix Challenge medal in
addition to each race's finisher medals.
The Marathon and Half Marathon participants will embark from the Seattle
Center beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7. The course leads runners
through downtown Seattle on 5th Avenue before turning and heading up north
on Interstate 5 and crossing the Ship Canal Bridge. Runners will then
continue onto a beautiful stretch of the course that features waterfront
views along Lake Union. Athletes will then continue along Lake Union and
through the Fremont Google Campus before heading back down south to cross
the Ballard Bridge. Participants will pass through the Queen Anne Hill
neighborhood and pass right by the famous Grey's Anatomy intern house. Just
around the corner, participants will be treated to views of the iconic
Seattle skyline as they pass by Kerry Park and make their way back to the
Seattle Center to cross the finish line.
Race weekend begins with a Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, June 5 from
12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at
the CenturyLink Field Event Center, West Hall. The expo will showcase
vendors featuring the latest in running gear, nutrition, and training, and
is free and open to the public.
