Over 17,000 Runners Converge In The Nation's Capital For
2019 United Airlines Rock 'n' Roll Washington DC Marathon & 1/2 Marathon
Tyler Andrews repeats as winner of the marathon
while Katie Walter wins the women's race;
Thomas Toth and Julia Roman-Duval finish first in the half marathon
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 9, 2019) - More than 17,000 registered participants
from ages 12 to 81 took to the streets of Washington D.C this weekend to
participate in 2019 United Airlines Rock 'n' Roll Washington DC Marathon &
1/2 Marathon. With a focus on the core pillars of bringing Fun to the RunTM
with great music in a community environment, runners of all athletic levels
enjoyed taking in the iconic sights in the only marathon to take place
completely within the District of Columbia.
The best-in-class running event kicked off at 7 a.m. on Saturday when
runners from all 50 states and 51 countries took off in the marathon,
followed by the half-marathon at 8:30 a.m., both of which started at
Constitution Avenue and 14th Street NW. The event took runners through
downtown Washington D.C., various neighborhoods, historic sites such as
Union Station and the National Mall, past the White House, and along the
Anacostia River.
Runners also packed the start line of the 5K presented by Brooks which
began at RFK Stadium, crossed over the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge turned
around at East Capitol Street NE and returned to the finish line in front
of the stadium.
In the marathon, 28-year-old, Tyler Andrews (Cambridge, Mass.) repeats as
winner of the marathon in a time of 2:24:13. Aaron Kremer (Washington,
D.C.) finished in second with a time of 2:29:34 as Louis Levine (Baltimore,
Md.) rounded out the podium in third finishing in 2:32:00. Katie Walter
(Chapel Hill, N.C.) was the women's marathon champion with a final time of
2:59:55. Megan Venables (Newark, N.J.) took the second-place spot in
3:13:23 and Anna Buser (McLean, Va.) finished third in 3:15:46.
In the half-marathon, 27-year-old, Thomas Toth (Plaistow, N.H.) crossed the
finish as overall champion in a time of 1:05:11. Mizael Carrera
(Albuquerque, N.M.) finished in second with a time of 1:05:33 as Fernando
Cabada (Lakewood, Colo.) came in third finishing in 1:06:38. Julia
Roman-Duval (Columbia, Md.) was the women's half marathon champion with a
final time of 1:16:33. Margaret Diacont (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the
second-place spot in 1:17:21 and Khia Kurtenbach (New York, N.Y.) rounded
out the podium in third with a time of 1:17:41.
Elite runners and fast times aside, Saturday's races were all about the
party atmosphere. Some of the best live bands from around D.C. spread
across the course, including: The Foxfires, Enviro Drum- Maryland, Ocho de
Bastos, Supreme Chord, The Rockits, Bravenoise, The Buzz Hounds, D.J
Daniel, School of Rock, Soul Stew and BATALA Washington, DC.
The musically themed road race concluded with the sounds of Richmond,
Virginia's Carbon Leaf taking to the to the stage as the headliner for the
Toyota Rock 'n' Roll Concert Series, bringing runners and their families to
their feet in celebration of the day's accomplishments.
