Former Champions Reyes, Faber Headline 2014 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
$145,000 Purse Set for USA Men's & Women's Marathon Championships
St. Paul, Minn. - September 4, 2014 - Former champions Sergio Reyes
(Palmdale, Calif.) and Jeannette Faber (Pegram, Tenn.) will headline the
Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on October 5, which will host the 2014 USA
Men's and Women's Marathon Championships.
Reyes, who won the USA Marathon title at the 2010 Medtronic Twin Cities
Marathon, seeks to improve upon his 4th-place finish at the event a year
ago. Reyes led last year's race in the late-going, setting a personal best
of 2:13:34 on the challenging course from downtown Minneapolis to the
Minnesota State Capitol grounds in St. Paul. This year's competition will
mark the ninth time the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has hosted the USA
Men's Marathon Championship.
Faber won the 2012 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in 2:32:37 in what was
her 13th straight personal best for the distance. Faber, who represented
the United States in the marathon at last summer's IAAF World Track & Field
Championships in Moscow, returns to the race recognized as "The Most
Beautiful Urban Marathon in America®" for the first time since her victory.
The USA Women's Marathon Championship is making its eighth visit to the
event and ninth stop in the Twin Cities.
Competitors in the USA Championships will be racing for $145,000 in prize
money, including $25,000 for the winners and an additional $25,000 course
record bonus should the men's champion break Phil Coppess's mark of 2:10:05
set in 1985 or the women's winner better the record shared by Zinaida
Semenova (2001) and Irina Permitina (2004) at 2:26:51.
"We're honored to host the USA Championships again and we're always pleased
to welcome back former champions," Twin Cities In Motion Executive Director
Virginia Brophy Achman said. "Offering developmental and championship
racing opportunities for American athletes with Olympic aspirations is part
of our mission at Twin Cities In Motion. We're glad to partner with USA
Track & Field in that effort."
In addition to the USA Marathon Championships, the race will host the USA
Masters Marathon Championships, the national championship for athletes 40
years old and older. This year will mark the 24th-straight year that the
Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has played host to the USA Masters
Championships.
