FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Past and Future to Star at 40th Anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
Full-Capacity Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Returns
Sept. 30 - Oct 2
St. Paul, Minn. - September 27, 2022 - A celebration of its
four-decade-long history and the introduction of new features to enhance
the event going forward will share the spotlight at this weekend's 40th
Anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend, September 30 - October
2 in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The event returns to full capacity after cancellation of in-person events
in 2020 due to the pandemic and running with half-capacity fields in 2021
for safety. More than 9,000 runners are expected for the marathon this year
and nearly 11,000 for the 10 mile race.
Finishers Since 1982 - Fourteen athletes - 13 runners and one wheelchair
competitor - have finished every Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon since the
event's inception in 1982. The marathon's "Charter Club" literally embodies
the 40-year history of the event. Each Charter Club member has logged over
1,000 miles on the streets and parkways during the 39 races they've run so
far.
More Beauty - Runner's World magazine dubbed the Medtronic Twin Cities
Marathon "the Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America®" in the 1980s.
Starting this year, marathon organizer Twin Cities In Motion will add
artistic beauty to the marathon known for its fall scenery. Artists will
create live paintings capturing the spirit of the event at the start in
downtown Minneapolis, at three locations along the marathon course, and at
the finish line at the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul.
Diane & Alan Page Community Cheer Challenge - The marathon's most
recognizable spectator - former Minnesota Viking star and Minnesota Supreme
Court Justice Alan Page, who has played his sousaphone at the event for
decades - has lent his and his late wife's name to an effort to promote
cheering and runner support at the event. The Diane & Alan Page Community
Cheer Challenge offers nonprofit donations in the name of cheer zones that
earn recognition in various categories.
The 17th Edition with Medtronic - The 2022 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
marks the 17th edition with Medtronic as the event's title sponsor. Since
2006, the Medtronic partnership has been instrumental in growing the event
and expanding the Twin Cities In Motion's nonprofit mission. Medtronic
invites race fans to a front row seat at the finish line in the Medtronic
Grandstand on marathon weekend.
USATF 10 Mile Championship - Continuing a tradition of hosting championship
events for the U.S. Olympic hopefuls that dates to 1986, the Medtronic TC
10 Mile race, which precedes the marathon on Oct. 2, will host the 2022
USATF 10 Mile Championships. Top athletes from across the country will vie
for $12,000 in winners' prize money, plus an additional "Equalizer Bonus"
of $10,000 for the men's or women's champion who prevails in a handicapped
competition where the women's field is given a head start in the race.
TC Kids Run Free Program - Starting this year, kids aged 18 and under run
Twin Cities In Motion events at no charge, including on Medtronic Twin
Cities Marathon Weekend. To date, more than 3,000 kids have joined TCM for
youth races like the Diaper Dash and Toddler Trot to longer distances like
the 5K and 10 mile.
More Than a Marathon LIVE - Twin Cities In Motion and KARE 11 are teaming
up top produce live-steaming coverage of the 10 mile and marathon starting
at 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, and running until 2 p.m. KARE 11's Rena
Sarigianopoulos and Kiya Edwards will contribute to the show along with
Minnesota Olympian Carrie Tollefson and a host of others. More Than a
Marathon LIVE will embrace the whole of the event from the pros to the
middle of the pack, with coverage from start to finish and along the
course.
The Must-Have App Returns - The full-featured Twin Cities In Motion App,
presented by Medtronic, is a great tool for spectators looking to track
participants in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and Medtronic TC 10
Mile. The app is also full of helpful information and links to make the
most of runners' and spectators' marathon weekend experience. Download the
app by searching for "Twin Cities In Motion" in your app store.
A Free Beer at the Finish - The free Summit beer awaiting Saturday and
Sunday race finishers (21+ with valid ID) is a Medtronic Twin Cities
Marathon Weekend tradition. Spectators can join the Summit Beer Garden
celebration, too, where beer is for sale for $5, with proceeds supporting
the TC Kids Run Free program.
Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend kicks off at 11:00 a.m. on Friday,
Sept 30, with the opening of the Health & Fitness Expo at Saint Paul
RiverCentre. The expo, which runs through Saturday evening at 7 p.m.,
features more than 70 exhibitors, free presentations, and packet pick up
for the weekend's races.
More than 26,000 people are expected to participate in running events held
Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2. Saturday events at the State
Capitol grounds in St. Paul include the TC 10K, presented by Dermatology
Consultants, the TC 5K, presented by Fredrikson & Byron, P. A., and the
Medtronic TC Family Events.
The 24th annual Medtronic TC 10 Mile, known as the Shortcut to the
Capitol®, starts in downtown Minneapolis and kicks off the Sunday races at
approximately 6:53 a.m. The 40th Anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
follows at 7:55 a.m.
