TCM Community Contributions
Bolder Options provides a mentoring program that uses running and biking to
reach at-risk youth ages 12 to 17. Youth and mentors run or bike together
twice a week for twelve weeks and train for three races. At the heart of
the program is the matching of youth with a suitable running or biking
mentor. Together, they establish agreed upon distance goals that
progressively increase the participant's stamina, self-confidence and
self-esteem. Changing behavior is a key to the program's success.
Follow-up for the program continues for three years.
Second Harvest Food Banks of the Twin Cities is one of the nation's largest
domestic hunger relief organization. Through a network of more than 200
food banks and food-rescue programs, Second Harvest distributes food to 26
million hungry Americans each year, eight million of whom are children.
Last year, America's Second Harvest distributed one billion pounds of food
to needy Americans, serving all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The mission of
Second Harvest Food Banks is to "feed people who lack sufficient resources
by providing nutritious food through a network of food distribution
organizations."
Twin Cities Marathon scholarship program will provide a $1,000 scholarship
to one female and one male graduating high school student/athlete planning
to go to college. The student/athlete must be a cross-country and/or track
and field runner and have participated in distances of 800 meters and
longer. Applications will be available October 2001.
Twin Cities Marathon continues its 10th consecutive year as the
designated USATF National Masters Championship for men and women. In
addition to the marathon, the Twin Cities Marathon features a three-day
weekend celebration of fitness, including a Saturday 5K Fun Run/Walk and
children's fun runs, a pasta dinner, a two-day Health and Fitness Expo and
a 10 mile race on Sunday. Major sponsors for the 2001 marathon are Cub and
the Calhoun Beach Club. The major media sponsors are KARE 11 and Cities 97.
The designated community contributions are Bolder Options, Second Harvest
Food Bank of Greater Minneapolis and St. Paul and the TCM scholarship
program. Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is a non-profit organization that
directs the Twin Cities Marathon as a community service for the
Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Visit us at www.twincitiesmarathon.org.
