     TWIN CITIES MARATHON ANNOUNCES 2002 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS AT 
                     REGISTRATION KICK-OFF PARTY

1,300 attendees gathered at the early opportunity registration event
 
Minneapolis, Minnesota - May 1, 2002 - The Twin Cities Marathon Community 
Contributions Committee awarded two student-athletes, Rachel Anderson and 
Taylor Fay, each with a $1,000 scholarship at the Twin Cities Marathon 
(TCM) registration kick-off event held April 30 at the Calhoun Beach Club 
in Minneapolis.  

"The TCM Scholarship Program provides a great opportunity to reward and 
support the great student-athletes in our community," says Dan Finanger, 
TCM Executive Director.     

The TCM scholarship program provides a $1,000 scholarship to one female and 
one male graduating high school student-athlete planning to go to college.  
The applicants are evaluated on a variety of criteria including academic 
achievements, community service, running accomplishments and an essay. The 
student-athlete must be a cross-country and/or track and field runner and 
have participated in distances of 800 meters and longer.  Eligible 
student-athletes must also be students at a high school in the seven-county 
Twin Cities metro area with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.  

Rachel Anderson is an honor student at Harding High School with a GPA of 
3.98 and runs both cross-country and track, lettering five times for each 
sport.  In addition to serving as Captain for both teams over the last 
three years, Rachel's running accomplishments include: Most Valuable, All 
Conference, Most Improved for cross-country and track and Conference 
Champion for cross-country. Rachel has spent many hours volunteering at St. 
Johns Hospital, MS Walk-a-thon, and through the National Honors Society for 

Toys for Tots, a Book Drive and a Coat Drive. Rachel is the second oldest 
of eight children and helps out at home in addition to school, sports, 
volunteering and work.

Taylor Fay is an honor student at Wayzata High School with a GPA of 3.9 and 
runs cross-country.  In addition to serving as Captain in 2001, Taylor's 
running accomplishments include All Conference in 2000 and 2001, All State 
Honorable Mention 2000, All State 2001 and All American 2001.  Taylor has 
given many hours of community service to the following groups and 
organizations: YMCA Camp Icaghowan, Sharing and Caring Hands, Feed My 
Starving Children, building community trails and Meals on Wheels.

Registration Kick-Off Event Draws Record Crowd

More than 1,300 TCM runners, wheelers, sponsors, staff and volunteers 
turned out for the registration kick-off event April 30 at the Calhoun 
Beach Club in Minneapolis.  A total of 1,161 participants registered for 
2002 TCM in 3 hours, 400 more than last year's kick-off event attendance 
and registrations.

"With the field limited to 8,500 participants and having more than 1,100 
already registered," says Dan Finanger, TCM Executive Director.  "The 
marathon may fill within days." 

In addition, the event provided the opportunity to recognize athletes who 
have completed all 20 TCMs.  These participants are known as the TCM 
Charter Club, which has 89 members.

The 21st running of the TCM will be held Sunday, September 29.  On-line and 
paper registration for the marathon begins May 1.  Online registration is 
available at www.twincitiesmarathon.org or www.active.com.  Race officials 
anticipate the race to close within 14 days and encourage runners to 
register early.  Registration for the TC 10 Mile and State Capitol 5K and 
Family Events will be available July 1.

The 2002 TCM weekend is September 27-29 and will host the 2002 USA Men's, 
Women's and Masters Marathon Championships.  The three-day weekend 
celebration of fitness includes a 5K Fun Run/Walk, children's fun runs, 
pasta dinner, two-day health and fitness expo and a 10-mile race in 
addition to the marathon.  Major corporate sponsors for the marathon are 
Cub Foods, Calhoun Beach Club and Seagate.  The major media sponsors are 
KARE 11 and Cities 97.  Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is a non-profit 
organization that directs the TCM weekend as a community service for the
