FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RVM Marathon and Half Marathon Distances have Sold Out,
7 weeks from event
(Victoria, BC, August 23, 2024). Both the marathon and half marathon
distances for the 2024 Royal Victoria Marathon are now sold out. With over
seven weeks until race weekend, this is the earliest that these distances
have sold out in the event's 44 year history.
"When the marathon distance sold out in July, we thought the half would
eventually sell out as well, but not this early" stated Cathy Noel, GM/Race
Director for the RVM. "Now we will look to sell out the 8K, 5K and Thrifty
Foods Kids Run, as well as fill all our Peninsula Co-op Volunteer Crew
positions."
This year will see over 12,000 participants in the event, an increase of
3000 participants over last year's total.
"While we would love to continue to increase participant spaces for the two
sold out distances, we are limited by the capacity on the course, our city
permits, shirt and medal orders, supplies on course and more," explained
Noel. "We thought last year's increase was excellent, but this year is
beyond our wildest dreams. We hope this trend continues for next year when
we will be celebrating our 45th year!"
A waitlist is currently open for the marathon and half marathon. As people
transfer to a different distance, spaces open in the race. With the
excitement around this year's event, it is expected that the other race
distances still available will sell out. For those who aren't able to race
this year, they are encouraged to consider volunteering. There are a number
of great positions available, including water stations, route marshals,
setup and takedown and our green team (who will help the RVM leave the
route even cleaner than when the race started).
The 2024 RVM is on track to be one of the largest fields in the event's 44
year history. The 5K and Thrifty Foods Kids Run takes place on Saturday,
October 12 in Oak Bay, with the marathon, half marathon and 8K starting and
finishing in downtown Victoria on Sunday, October 13. With 18 charities in
the CHEK Charity Pledge Program, the event is also hoping to raise over
$100,000 again this year to add towards the overall total of $2.35 million
since 2005.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British
Columbia.
