Marine Corps Marathon Visits Schools to Promote Physical Fitness
On 22 March 2002, the Marine Corps Marathon staff visited the top
participating schools in Virginia and Maryland for the Healthy Kids' Fun
Run held in conjunction with the Marine Corps Marathon. Children from St.
John the Evangelist Elementary School, in Clinton, Maryland and Lynbrook
Elementary School in Springfield, Virginia eagerly awaited the presentation
of their award.
Race Director, Rick Nealis, and Public Relations Representative, Ruben
Rodriguez, Washington Post, gave a presentation to promote physical fitness
and a healthy life style to elementary-aged children. Nealis', who provided
security for the Olympic Torch for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City,
Utah, used the Olympic Torch to inspire the children to run and find their
dream. Nealis said, "Lighting the fire within the children to live a
healthy lifestyle is our number one goal and seeing their excited faces was
reward enough to put on this fun run."
Next month, the Marathon staff will visit H.D. Cooke Elementary School in
Washington, DC to proudly present their award. H.D. Cooke was the top
participating school in the District.
The 3rd Annual Healthy Kids' Fun Run will be held on October 26, 2002 at the
Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington, Virginia. We will accept 1,000 children. The
entry fee is a toy valued $10.00 for Toys for Tots.
