Non-traditional start time for Prague's annual Marathon Weekend
and Marathon Music Festival
For 11 years, Prague International Marathon events have been launched on
Sunday. But with an expanded number of races, and more runners entering
than ever before, Marathon Weekend has become a 2-day affair.
A pair of Fun runs will kick things off, beginning Saturday May 13. The
first, The Caddy City Run, sponsored by Volkswagen, is an 8 km race, with a
start time of 3 p.m. The Golf Plus family run, a 4 km race, also sponsored
by Volkswagen, starts at 3:20 p.m. Both races originate on Wenceslas
Square.
An environmental festival, also taking place on Saturday, will add a new
wrinkle to Marathon Weekend activities. Skanska Eco Day will feature
educational games for the children and provide information about the
ecology.
What's more, runners taking part in the Family 4 km event can actually
choose to run on behalf of the environment. All they have to do is bring
some household trash to the race and deposit it into the appropriate
container as an example to others to be registered as part of the Skanska
Eco Run.
Two in-line races will also take place on Saturday the 13th, both sponsored
by Algida. One is a 5 km family skate, starting at 4:00. The other is a
15 km race starting at 4:15. Both begin on Prague's Old Town Square.
The full marathon will begin at 9:00 on Sunday May 14 from Old Town Square.
Commensurate with the May 13 start of these races, Prague Marathon
Organizers will launch their traditional Marathon Music Festival. There
will be a parade featuring Brazilian drummers, Latin rhythms,
non-traditional music, dancers, jugglers and magicians. Spectators are
encouraged to wear Carnival masks, and join the fun.
There will also be assorted performers lining the 42 km course. Plus, a
2-day long, star-studded charity concert in the city center, themed
star_Fest. And subtitled, Sport: A bridge to life.
The parade begins at 3 p.m., starting in Wenceslas Square, and ending in
Old Town Square. The main stage performances taking place in Old Town
Square begin on Saturday at 3 p.m.. And they continue till 10 p.m.
Sunday, concerts begin at 9 a.m. and continue till 3 p.m.
In all, the festival will feature 37 bands, including headliners like Deda
Mládek Illegal Band, Bengas, B.S.P., Monika Absolonová, Petrá Cernocká, Sto
Zvírat and others.
While the concert is free, donations will be accepted to benefit Centrum
Paraple, helping wheelchair-bound patients take part in sports activities.
Between the thousands of runners, thousands of spectators and hundreds of
musicians, this will be the single largest cultural event in Central
Europe. As it has been for the past 8 years.
