2016 Olympic Trials Marathon to feature record prize money
December 4, 2014 -- ANAHEIM -- The 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men's
and Women's Marathon will deliver a record $600,000 prize money, USATF CEO
Max Siegel announced Thursday.
The Olympic Trials Marathons, to be contested Feb. 13, 2016 in Los Angeles,
will award $300,000 prize money to women and $300,000 to men. The top three
finishers from each race who meet Olympic time standards will make the team
for Rio.
"We are very happy to be in a position to ensure record prize money for our
top distance runners," said Siegel, who on Tuesday announced record revenue
for USATF and an additional $9 million in elite athlete funding from
2015-2020. "We are looking forward to a spectacular Olympic Trials in Los
Angeles and further elevating the profile of American marathoning, on one
of the world's most visible media stages.
"We are excited to collaborate with USATF in offering the highest prize
purse in the Olympic Trials Marathon history," said LA MARATHON LLC CEO
Tracey Russell. "This incentive gives us the opportunity to attract the
nation's most competitive long distance runners to the city of Los Angeles
and supports LA MARATHON LLC's long-term commitment to establish Los
Angeles as a premiere running city."
