GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE ANNOUNCES FINAL MARATHON RESULTS
Boston Marathon qualifier at Lancaster County retirement community draws
more than1,000 registrants
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — Apr. 11, 2011 — Lowell Ladd, 35, of Eagleville, Pa.,
finished first in the Garden Spot Village marathon on Sat., Apr. 9, with a
time of 2:46:15. Katie Shelley, 22, of Columbia, Pa., finished first in the
Women's Division and 17th overall, with a time of 3:16:16. Steven
Monteleone, 21, of Berkeley Heights, N.J., was first across the finish
line, winning the half marathon with a time of 1:16:36.
Richard Shaw, 52, of Fredericksburg, Va., won the Men's Grand Masters
Division, for runners 50 years old and better, with a time of 2:58:39.
Kathie Redmond, 52, of Coatesville, Pa, was the Women's Grand Masters
winner, finishing in 3:31:13.
"This year we had a higher number of 'grand masters' over 65 entered in the
marathon," said race director Scott Miller, himself a marathoner, who is
also marketing director of the retirement community.
More than 200 of the 1,000-plus registered participants were age 50 or
above. The oldest finishers in the full marathon, both age 75, were Ray
Moses of Huntsville, Ala., and Eugene DeFronzo of Cheshire, Conn. The
youngest finisher in the marathon was Benjamin Bliss, 13, of Corning, N.Y.

The Garden Spot Village Marathon previously offered first, second and
third-place awards for men and women in age categories, in five-year
increments, ranging from ages 13-19 to age 70-plus. This year, the age
category awards were extended to recognize the individual achievements of
men and women runners ages 65 to 69, 70 to 74, 75 to 79, 80 to 84, and
85-plus. The event is believed to be the first marathon hosted by a
retirement community.
An estimated 2,000 runners and spectators gathered near the community's
LegacyGarden in the cool, crisp morning air for the start of the race. Sen.
Mike Brubaker sent the marathoners on their way along a USA Track & Field
(USATF)-certified course, which circles through the farmlands at the foot
of Welsh Mountain before returning to the 104-acre Garden Spot Village
campus. The event is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
First-place marathon finishers in each of four categories won cash awards:
Men Overall,Women Overall, Men 50-plus and Women 50-plus. The Garden Spot
Village Marathon is unique in that the masters awards for runners 50-plus
are the same amounts as the overall awards.

The Widener Law team from Harrisburg won the Relay Division with a time of
2:56:19. The Hot Papas from Sinking Springs took second place with a time
of 3:11:34, and the Chris McGrath Team, from Burtonsville, Md., finished
third, in 3:15:55.
Proceeds from the marathon benefit the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund,
which helps support residents who need financial assistance. The event's
Gold Sponsor is CBS 21 News. Comcast and Warfel Construction Company are
Bronze Sponsors. Fessers Distributors, Liberty Sports Magazine, Pioneer,
Singer, Kegel's Produce, Spring Glen Fresh Foods, Triangle Communications
and Turkey Hill are Marathon Special Friends. Graystone Bank, Hess Energy,
Highmark and United Concordia sponsored mile markers along the 26.2-mile,
USA Track & Field-certified, Boston Marathon qualifier course. The
Lancaster School of Massage provided complimentary sports massage for
participants in the recovery tent.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund,
which helpssupport residents who need financial assistance.
