17th Annual William A. Irvin 5K Results
Behling, Tollefson Claim Titles
(Duluth, Minn.) Grandma's Marathon weekend kicked off tonight with the
William A. Irvin 5K - the first of three races scheduled for the 34th
annual event.
Duluth's Scott Behling, 20, won the 3.1-mile race in a time of 16 minutes
and 39 seconds.
He finished second in the same race last year. The 2008 Duluth East High
School graduate also plans to run tomorrow's Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon.
Benjamin Bayer, 21, also of Duluth, finished second in 16:46. He placed
sixth in 2009.
In the women's division, St. Paul's Carrie Tollefson took the title in
18:25. The 2004 Olympian slowed near the finish line in order to finish
side-by-side with fellow St. Paul runner Erin Ward. Duluth's Kathleen
Monaghan placed third in 18:27.
Defending champion Michelle Oman, of Mankato, Minn., ended up fourth.
A record 1,653 registered for the event with an unofficial 1,364 finishing

The 20th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and 34th annual Grandma's
Marathon are tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., respectively. A record
field of 6,876 is registered for the half marathon, while 7,387 are signed
up for the full marathon.
