20/02/2018
The London Marathon Charitable Trust has today announced new grants
totalling more than £1 million for projects in London, Surrey and South
Northamptonshire, taking the total amount of money awarded in The Trust's
history to more than £68 million.
The latest grants include £140,000 to English National Ballet towards a
community Engagement Space at the organisation's new home on London City
Island, which it will share with English National Ballet School. The new
building will host a range of accessible and inclusive classes such as
Dance for Parkinson's, Dance for Dementia, BalletActive for girls,
BalletFit, Pilates and yoga.
English National Ballet's Executive Director, Patrick Harrison, said: "We
are thrilled by the support of The London Marathon Charitable Trust, which
will allow us to deliver our already successful engagement programmes, such
as Dance for Parkinson's, to their full potential. When we move to our new
building next year, we will have three times the footprint we currently
have, and will be able to welcome a wider range of people. This grant will
create space for us to develop new programmes, tailored to our new East
London community, who we will invite to be physically active in our
building, and inspire to do more elsewhere."
Jubilee Hall Trust received £165,000 towards remodelling and refurbishing
Jubilee Hall Gym which will support growth in female membership and
participation, allow more targeted work with older people, engage and
support local people from lower socio-economic groups to access the
facilities and allow the charity to re-establish a GP referral scheme at
the site.
Phil Rumbelow, the charity's Chief Executive, said: "Covent Garden's
Jubilee Hall was originally built by the Duke of Bedford in 1897 to house
flowers, and was then saved from developers by a group of local activists
in the 1970's, and first opened its doors as a community sports centre in
January 1978. This year, the charity celebrates its 40th anniversary, and
we aim to restore the Jubilee Hall gym to its rightful place as a thriving
and iconic central London community asset, which enables more people to get
more active, more often.
"This very generous grant from The London Marathon Charitable Trust will
ensure that we can maximise our Grade II listed building's attributes, to
provide a unique workout space for our most disadvantaged local residents,
and help address the health inequalities that exist in this part of our
capital city."
Other major grants include £175,000 to two community pavilions in Surrey
which will support the delivery of cricket, football and various other
sports and physical activities to people of all ages and abilities. Capel
Sports Pavilion was awarded a grant of £100,000 and Valley End Cricket Club
received an award of £75,000.
Anthony Birch, Chair of Capel Sports Pavilion charity, said: "We have been
fundraising for many years to provide a better sports facility for our
community and one that could be used by everyone. This is a crucial grant
which will make the project possible. The support from The London Marathon
Charitable Trust throughout our bid has been superb. This fantastic award
means that we can now achieve our dream of providing our community with a
facility that will make a difference to many people's lives."
Ray Ferris, Development Director at Valley End Cricket Club, said: "We are
delighted and extremely grateful to have received this generous grant from
The London Marathon Charitable Trust. The project team have been working
for over 5 years to pull the required funding together to make the dream of
a new pavilion for the Cricket Club and community a reality. This award
will make the difference between being able to build this year or extending
the project into 2020/21. As well as helping us serve all our cricket
playing members that include over 250 youth and disability cricketers it
will help us provide a great facility for the local community."
Two London Councils received grants totalling £175,000 to upgrade key
community play facilities which will offer a range of inclusive and
exciting play opportunities for children and young people.
The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames was awarded a grant of £100,000
towards improvements to Woodgate Avenue Playground which will provide more
stimulating and accessible play opportunities for local children and young
people in partnership with Our Parks and Yorda Adventures.
Cllr Phil Doyle, Lead Member for Resident Services for the Royal Borough of
Kingston upon Thames, said: "We're very pleased to have been awarded this
funding from The London Marathon Charitable Trust to improve one of the
playgrounds in our borough. The grant will contribute towards buying and
installing new play and recreational equipment in Woodgate Avenue
playground for children and their families to enjoy. The improvement works
will complement our ongoing £2 million investment into Kingston's parks,
which will benefit the local community for generations to come. We will be
working with community groups to encourage people who don't regularly
exercise to get active, which will improve their health and wellbeing."
The London Borough of Hackney was awarded £75,000 towards transforming
Daubeney Fields Play Area in order to provide high quality play
opportunities for children and young people, helping to address high
childhood obesity levels within the local area. Cllr Feryal Demirci,
Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Transport & Parks, said: "Most homes
near Daubeney Fields are flats without gardens, so it's really important
for children to have good quality outdoor space to play in. I'm delighted
that we have received this funding so we can provide even better facilities
for local children to get active and play outdoors"
Reigate Rugby Club was awarded £45,000 towards the creation of a new rugby
training pitch which will support the delivery of initiatives such as Touch
Rugby aimed and engaging participants who are new to the sport,
particularly children and young people.
"Reigate Rugby Club is absolutely delighted that The London Marathon
Charitable Trust has chosen to support our club to create a new training
pitch," Mike Jarvis, Reigate RFC President, added. "The principle objective
of the club is to provide facilities for and promote the participation of
sport by the whole community. The club is working hard to support the next
generation and this grant will enable us to fulfil our vision and expand
our facilities to cope with an increasing number of youngsters and women
interested in rugby and to enable us to provide our facilities to groups
outside of rugby."
In total, 19 grants were awarded by The London Marathon Charitable Trust
totalling £1,014,590. Of those grants, £712,250 were awarded to projects in
London boroughs, £276,000 to four projects in Surrey and £26,340 awarded to
two projects in South Northamptonshire.
The Trust's mission is to help make available high-quality, accessible and
affordable opportunities for sport, play and physical activity, primarily
in the areas in which London Marathon Events Limited organises
mass-participation sporting events. The funding goes towards facilities
projects that inspire increased participation in physical activity, sport
and play. The Trust supports organisations with a clear commitment to
getting people more active and effective strategies for helping people to
build physical activity into their daily lives.
Sarah Ridley, Chief Grants Officer of The London Marathon Charitable Trust,
said: "We are in the midst of a physical inactivity and obesity crisis. The
long term health and wellbeing of children and young people is at serious
risk due to the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles. At the same time,
certain sections of the population are much more likely to suffer the
adverse consequences of being inactive. Continued investment in accessible
and inclusive facilities and opportunities to be physically active has
never been more important.
The Trust provides grants to organisations which can demonstrate a real
commitment to engaging and supporting the whole community to be more
active, more often."
