MARINE CORPS MARATHON ANNOUNCES 1ST ANNUAL MARINE CORP MARATHON 5K

WHAT: 1st Annual Marine Corps Marathon 5K race presented by Deer Park
Natural Spring Water and Special Olympics
WHERE: The race starts at Route 110 and finishes at the Iwo Jima Monument
in Arlington, VA.
WHEN: October 27, 2002, 9:15 a.m., immediately following the start of the
Marine Corps Marathon.

ENTRY FEE: $25
ELIGIBILITY: The 5K Run is open to all people who are physically fit. It is
also recommended that anyone over the age of 35 and/or with a family
history of heart disease consult with their physician running a race.
LIMITATIONS: The Race Director reserves the right to reject any entry. No
unauthorized bicycles, roller skates, walkmans, other similar devices or
pets will be permitted during the race. This is a matter of safety and no
exceptions will be made.
TIMING: Every runner will receive a Champion Chip for timing. The chip will
be in the runners' packets and has to be attached with a Velcro strip or
nylon tie to the runner's shoe or your shoelaces. Race organizers will
collect the chip at the finish line. If the chip is not returned, a $30.00
replacement fee will be assessed. Runners with their own personal chip must
have the serial number recorded during packet pick up.
PACKET PICK-UP: Packet Pick up will be held in conjunction with the Marine
Corps Marathon during the following hours:
Semper Fit Health Fair, Quantico, VA
Wednesday, October 23, 2002, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, VA
Thursday, October 24, 2002, 4 - 8 p.m.
Friday, October 25, 2002, 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.
Saturday, October 26, 2002, 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.
There is no same day registration or race day packet pick up.
AMENITIES: You will receive a T-Shirt, finisher's medal and refreshments at
the Finish line.
TRANSPORTATION ON RACE DAY: Metro opens at 6:30 a.m.. Please take the
Orange or Blue lines to the Rosslyn stop or take the Blue line to the
Arlington Cemetery stop.
AWARDS: 1st Place 5k male and female; 1st Place Special Olympians, male and
female, and 1st Place unified team will receive awards. The awards ceremony
will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Iwo Jima War Memorial, Arlington, VA.
MARINE CORPS MARATHON INFORMATION: The mission of the Marine Corps Marathon
is to promote the United States Marine Corps commitment to physical fitness
by organizing a "People's Marathon" where runners can achieve a personal
goal and realize their full potential. More than 20,000 runners have
registered to run one of the most scenic routes in the country: along the
Potomac, around the Pentagon, down the National Mall and past the Capitol
Building. This year's marathon will be held Sunday, October 27, 2002 at
8:30 a.m. The Marine Corps Marathon also hosts The Washington Post
presents: The Healthy Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 26 and the Marine
Corps Marathon 5K presented by Deer Park on Sunday, October 27, immediately
following the start of the Marathon.
