FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Life Time Miami Marathon Expands Non-Binary Athlete Awards Division
Fourteen Non-Binary runners among 18,000 set to participate
in January 29 race
MIAMI (January 11, 2023) - The Life Time Miami Marathon announced that it
has implemented a recognition and awards category for runners who identify
as non-binary in both the Full and Half marathon events. Fourteen
non-binary runners will be among 18,000 runners navigating the streets of
Downtown Miami, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove on January 29, 2023, in South
Florida's elite running event.
The change expands recognition of the non-binary winners of the Full and
Half Marathon races previously to the top three non-binary finishers in
each race this year. It also aligns with other major running events in the
United States, including the Boston Marathon, New York Marathon, Chicago
Marathon and Philadelphia Distance Run, creating more opportunities in
sports for athletes of all identities. Trans runners have long been able to
participate in competitive athletic events, but until recently, gender
choices were limited to male or female.
"This step puts an exclamation point on our commitment to total
inclusivity," Marathon Director of Marketing, Nicole Bostick, said.
"Running events are for everyone and we've always wanted to ensure that our
start line reflects the diversity of society, including runners of all
ages, abilities, cultures and beyond. We attract runners from all over the
world and it is important that everyone feels at home when they come to Run
Miami."
The global movement to formalize non-binary categories for runners was
spearheaded by Jake Fedorowski, a runner who released a 24-page Guide to
non-binary Inclusion in Running in 2022, outlining how race directors can
make their events more inclusive. The guide is available for free on
nonbinaryrunning.com, along with a database of the more than 200 races that
offer non-binary categories.
The Life Time Miami Marathon achieved its earliest sellout ever in October
2022, with 18,000 runners expected from all 50 states and nearly 70
countries. Participants will take on the USTAF-certified, Boston-qualifying
fast-and-flat course, which showcases the best views of Miami's cityscape
and waterways.
In addition to the Full and Half Marathon events, the Life Time Tropical 5K
will take place Saturday, January 28. Registration is available at
www.themiamimarathon.com/tropical-5k. The #VirtuallyMiamiFamous
virtual run also is making its return in all three distances, allowing
participants, including non-binary runners, to take part from around the
world: www.themiamimarathon.com/virtuallymiamifamous
