MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, CITY OF MIAMI AND CITY OF MIAMI BEACH ANNOUNCE PLANS
FOR THE MIAMI TROPICAL MARATHON - FEBRUARY 2, 2003
Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, along with City of Miami Beach
Mayor David Dermer, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and
PR Racing Inc., held a press conference on July 23rd, 2002 at the American
Airlines Arena to announce plans for the Miami Tropical Marathon.
Scheduled to take place February 2nd, 2003, the Miami Tropical Marathon
hopes to establish itself among other elite marathons such as San Diego,
Chicago and New York. The 26.2-mile course will begin and end in front of
the American Airlines Arena and run through the City of Miami Beach, City
of Miami and Miami-Dade County.
"The Miami Tropical Marathon will serve many purposes. For one thing, it
will further establish Greater Miami as a world sports center - and it
will bring additional visitors here to become acquainted with all the
wonderful attractions of our community," said Mayor Penelas.
"Marathon running has become a major event throughout the world," said
Mayor Dermer. "It is our intention to bring the standard of the Miami
Tropical Marathon to the same professional level as some of the more
established races." In fact, organizers hope to attract between 4,000
to 5,000 participants from throughout the United States, Latin America,
and the world for the inaugural marathon. According to Robert Pozo,
president of PR Racing, Inc., Olympic marathon runners Ronnie Holassie
(Trinidad) and Keith Brantly (USA) - both attended the press event --
have committed to participate in the Miami Tropical Marathon.
"As a runner and Miami native, it thrills me to be organizing a
world-class marathon here, in my hometown," said Pozo. "Within a few
years, we aim to become one of the top ten marathons in the world."
