2018 TCS New York City Marathon Has Record Number 52,812 Finishers
as Champions Thank the NYPD With Official Finish-Line Tape
Event smashes record as world's largest marathon,
surpassing previous mark from 2016
New York, November 5, 2018 - A total of 52,812 runners crossed the finish
line at the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, breaking the
record for the most finishers of any marathon in the world. The previous
mark for the world's largest marathon was the 2016 TCS New York City
Marathon with 51,394 finishers.
All four champions - Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa, Kenya's Mary Keitany, the
United States' Daniel Romanchuk, and Switzerland's Manuela Schär - along
with the winners of the Rising New York Road Runners Youth Invitational
Nolan Defreitas and Juliette Salazar presented NYPD officers with an
official finish-line tape on Monday to thank them for putting on the
world's largest marathon.
Desisa won his first TCS New York City Marathon and Mary Keitany won her
fourth - both recording the second fastest times in history in the open
division for men and women. At 20 years old, Daniel Romanchuk became the
first-ever American and youngest athlete to win the men's wheelchair
division, while Switzerland's Manuela Schär won her second consecutive
title in the women's wheelchair division.
