Raleigh, NC - January 13, 2015 - Multi-platinum rock band Smash Mouth will
take to the outdoor stage at the Red Hat Amphitheater on Sunday, April 12
for the post race concert at the 2015 Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon & ½
Marathon presented by WRAL benefiting The V Foundation. The band's
performance caps a day that begins with the musical marathon and
half-marathon road races. Featuring a new and improved marathon route in
the event's second year, the course starts and finishes in downtown
Raleigh.
Since bursting onto the scene in the late 1990's with the hit single
"Walkin' on the Sun", Smash Mouth has collectively sold more than 10
million albums worldwide. The band is known for its retro style spanning
several decades of popular music and their eclectic cover of The Monkees
classic "I'm a Believer," which was prominently featured on the Shrek movie
soundtrack. All three co-founding band members - Steve Harwell, Greg Camp,
and Paul DeLisle - are no strangers to the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series
having performed as the headliner for the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll
Arizona Marathon in 2009.
"We were hoping to find an upbeat group that would keep the good times
going while our participants celebrated their achievements, and Smash Mouth
fit the ticket perfectly," said Alex Bennett, VP and Event Director. "With
live bands performing at every-mile along the route, the Rock 'n' Roll
Marathon experience makes running fun. Having long since established itself
as the ultimate party-band, the vibe surrounding Smash Mouth is indeed - at
its core - about having fun."
The 2015 Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon & ½ Marathon will once again start
on South Salisbury Street in downtown Raleigh. Participants will experience
sights like the Governor's Mansion, Rose Garden, and Historic Oakwood
neighborhood. The route runs through Meredith College and North Carolina
State, before finishing in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street near the
Red Hat Amphitheater, where runners can gather with friends and family for
the Finish Line Festival concert.
The race benefits The V Foundation for Cancer Research, founded by the late
Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN
commentator. Since 1993, The Foundation has funded more than $115 million
in cancer research grants nationwide and Team V efforts raised more than
$300,000 at the inaugural event in April. Runners can join the cause by
running for Team V at www.run4v.org.
Marathon weekend begins with a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the
Raleigh Convention Center where all participants go to pick up their race
number. The expo will feature dozens of running and fitness retailers,
exhibits with free nutritional samples and a series of interactive clinics
with running experts and pro athletes.
All race participants receive free admission to the Smash Mouth concert
held at the Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown Raleigh. For more information
