FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CUB FOODS ANCHORS TCM CORPORATE SPONSORS FOR 2002 RACE

Area grocer provides key support for 8th consecutive year

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota - July 17, 2002 - Cub Foods has been a major
sponsor of the Twin Cities Marathon (TCM) for eight years. Their
partnership is a perfect fit for nearly 15,000 TCM athletes needing a vast
range of nutritious groceries to complement months of training preceding
the race. Cub Foods' also offers a good variety of food products to
athletes after they've crossed the finish line.

"TCM is again proud to have Cub Foods as one of our Major Corporate
Sponsors and our Official Grocery Store," said Dan Finanger, executive
director of TCM. "Cub Foods has been our partner for many years, and their
involvement contributes greatly to the success of the weekend's events."

Cub Foods provides fruit, yogurt, salad, and soft drinks for the TCM
Creamette(r) Pasta Party, and it will host the "Cub Foods Court," which
is the finish line food area for TCM and the TC 10 Mile Run, both held on
Sunday, September 29. Cub Foods will also provide food and beverages for
TCM's VIP/hospitality suites.

Cub Foods first saw its logo on a TCM finisher t-shirt in 1995, and the
company has lent its support to TCM ever since. "Cub Foods is very excited
to once again be a major sponsor of the Twin Cities Marathon," said Joan
Dyer, senior promotions manager at Cub Foods. "Cub Foods is committed to
sponsoring fun, family events that promote good health, nutrition and
fitness." Cub Foods' partnership with TCM now extends even deeper
because of its relationship with Coca-Cola and POWERade drink, this year's
official sports drink of TCM.

In addition to its sponsorship, Cub Foods also contributes to the field of
participants, according to Dyer. At least 20 Cub Foods employees will run
TCM this year. Of course, even more will be cheering on the runners. "Even
if you are not a runner, the TCM is a great race for the community to watch
and cheer on the runners," Dyer said. "Cub store managers and their
families volunteer at the aid station on mile 13 by filling water cups and
cheering on the runners."

The 2002 TCM weekend is September 27-29. TCM will host the 2002 USA Men's,
Women's and Masters Marathon Championships. The three-day weekend
celebration of fitness includes a 5K Fun Run/Walk, children's fun runs,
pasta dinner, two-day health and fitness expo, and a 10 mile race in
addition to the marathon. Major corporate sponsors for the marathon are
Cub Foods, Calhoun Beach Club and Seagate Technology. The major media
sponsors are KARE 11 and Cities 97. Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is a
non-profit organization that directs the TCM weekend as a community service
for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Visit us at www.twincitiesmarathon.org.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, Cub Foods, one of the first discount food
stores in the country, established the original concept of "Consumers
United for Buying" in 1968 with its first store. In 1980, SUPERVALU bought
Cub Foods and expanded it from five stores to more than 40 in the Twin
Cities and 102 nationwide. Cub's efficient buying, volume purchasing and
disciplined format bring low prices to its consumers.
