FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR 2002 TWIN CITIES MARATHON
Minneapolis, Minnesota – August 22, 2002 - In five weeks, 15,000 athletes
and hundreds of thousands of spectators will come to the Twin Cities and
participate in many Twin Cities Marathon activities. Marathon Volunteer
Committee Chair Kathy Hoffman Gillis reports that over 5,000 volunteers
provide various services over the course of the three-day event as well as
in the months of preparation leading up to the races.
"We can’t say enough about our volunteers," says Gillis. "They are one of
the primary reasons the weekend runs so smoothly." During Race Weekend,
September 27-29, 2002, volunteers will be on-site at several locations to
help athletes and spectators enjoy themselves and make the most of the
exciting events surrounding the marathon.
Volunteers of all ages assist key areas of the marathon including:
participant services (gear, transportation, etc.), start and finish line,
course marshals, medical and massage, aid stations, post race party,
information booths, race packet pick-up, merchandise sales, set-up and tear
down of all events, 5K & Family Events.
Volunteers receive a special t-shirt to recognize their service. For more
information about becoming a Twin Cities Marathon Volunteer in the areas
listed above or in another capacity, contact the Volunteer Hotline at (612)
925-3500 x19 or email volunteers@twincitiesmarathon.org.
The 2002 TCM weekend is September 27-29. TCM will host the 2002 USA Men’s,
Women’s and Masters Marathon Championships. The three-day weekend
celebration of fitness includes a 5K fun run/walk, children’s fun runs, a
pasta dinner, a two-day health and fitness expo, and a 10-mile race in
addition to the marathon. Major corporate sponsors for the marathon are
Cub Foods, Calhoun Beach Club and Seagate Technology. The major media
sponsors are KARE 11 and Cities 97. Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. is a
non-profit organization that directs the TCM weekend as a community service
