Charity Partnerships with 27th Marine Corps Marathon
Key to Raising More Than $5 Million
December 23, 2002
Charitable organizations that developed partnerships with last October's
27th Marine Corps Marathon raised more than $5.5 million for their causes.
The Marine Corps Marathon, the sixth largest marathon in the country, run
every October in Arlington, Virginia, allots blocks of guaranteed entries to
partner charitable organizations to aid in fundraising efforts. Runners may
enter an online lottery registration for a chance to gain entry to the race
or run for a participating charity with a guaranteed slot. Partner causes
ranged from AIDS research to helping the homeless.
"The Marine Corps Marathon is proud to provide the means for these
worthwhile organizations to raise funds," said Marine Corps Marathon Race
Director Rick Nealis. "These charitable partnerships also provide
individuals the opportunity to make a commitment to a cause and to
participating in the 'People's Marathon.'"
The National AIDS Marathon Training Program (nearly $2.5 million) and The
Leukemia-Lymphoma Society ($1.8 million) led more than a dozen partner
organizations in fundraising efforts. Other organizations included Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, Catholic Charities, Children's Hospital, The Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, Family and Children's Services of Washington DC, The
International Association of Firefighters, The National Multiple Sclerosis
Society-National Capitol Chapter, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital,
Lombardi Cancer Center, and The University of Virginia Health System.
"Placing a St. Jude Runners team in the Marine Corps Marathon makes a big
difference annually for the children at St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital," said St. Jude Associate Regional Director Carrie Denning. "The
2002 team raised enough money to pay for the complete cost of treatment for
one child with acute lymphocytic leukemia and four courses of radiotherapy
for children with brain tumors."
