Cash Prizes, New Beneficiary Announced For Cerrone Ocean State Marathon
September 10, 2003: The Cerrone Ocean State Marathon and Half Marathon will
have a modest cash purse and a new beneficiary when the 11th annual running
toes off from in front of the Rhode Island State Capitol at 7:55 am on
October 12.
"The sponsorship of Cerrone has enabled us to reinstitute a prize structure
for the marathon component of this year's event," said Gerry Beagan, race
director. "We are delighted to be able to enhance the awards in a way that
encourages local competition."
"We will have $1000 each for the overall men's and women's division
winners, $750 for second place $500 for third, $300 for fourth and $200 for
fifth. If any of those finishers is a Rhode Island resident the prize will
be doubled. We believe the dedication and effort of these athletes deserves
recognition and we specifically want to inspire local athletes to compete
and succeed in the state's only full distance marathon," said Al Cerrone of
Cerrone Auto Group, South Attleboro, MA.
In selecting the Boys and Girls Club of Providence as this year's event
beneficiary the marathon chose an agency that fosters local youth through
programs and activities and has had direct involvement through staffing of
two aid stations on the route.
"Our commitment to the Boys and Girls Club of Providence is based on the
belief that providing area youth with facilities and programs to enhance
their lifestyles and encourage participation in numerous activities will go
a long way in improving their chances for success in their futures," said
Beagan
The remaining award structure continues through the top ten overall and the
first three finishers in the age groupings of 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 54-59,
60-64, 65-69 and 70+ for both men and women and to the first RI State
Trooper, police officer and firefighter in both the marathon and the half
marathon.
The first overall man and woman in the marathon will also receive a round
trip air ticket to any destination in the continental US and the first RI
man and woman will receive a round trip air ticket to any destination in
Florida. These awards are donated by Donovan Travel of East Greenwich.
All entrants receive a t-shirt and all finishers of both races receive
unique Rhode Island silhouette medallions.
The Ocean State Marathon and Half Marathon, run entirely within the city of
Providence, are USATF sanctioned and certified and will feature
ChampionChip timing by Granite State Race Services. The marathon is a
Boston Marathon qualifier.
There are no field limits for either event and registration continues up to
and including the Health and Fitness Fair at the Rhode Island Convention on
Saturday, October 11 from noon to 6pm. Pre-registered runners will be able
to pick up their numbers, runner packet, t-shirt and ChampionChip then or
the following morning at the convention center from 6:30 am to 7:45 am.
Volunteers are needed for both Saturday and Sunday to perform numerous
tasks at the convention center, at the starting line, on the course and at
the finish line. All volunteers receive a race t-shirt.
