"water, or rather, the lack thereof" (about: 2004)
4-5 previous marathons
| 3 Singapore International Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 There is not enough water for the back or the pack. Towards the end of the half marathon, a water point was out of water and there were still runners going the other way. I was at the 18 km mark (around there) so the other way (due to the loop) was about 14 km. It seemed a potentially dangerous thing because one of the runners was still going for the marathon. On the whole, a good race, but more water and more sports drinks please.

"Organizer listened to the feedback" (about: 2004)
4-5 previous marathons
| 2 Singapore International Marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 The organizer listened to the feedback and made some changes. A staggered start time (6:00 marathon, 6:30 1/2 marathon) and a modified route. All races start and end at the Padang. The Marina South loop is now in the beginning, and the East Coast Park loop (though shorter) towards the end. The weather of course will still be as hot and humid, and they are expecting more runners this year. Looking forward towards a fun marathon!

"Good race after all" (about: 2004)
3 previous marathons
| 1 Singapore International Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 A good race overall. Organization at the start point was BAD. Got myself stuck in a sea of 10k and 1/2 marathon runners who refused to make way even when the announcer requested that they give way. The marina loop was the meanest part of the run. Long and even worse, you have to run back the same route with no cheer/spectators support. More drinks along the way would have been fun. Also the half marathoners and the 10k runners don't need power gel. Make more of that available to the full marathoners after the end of the half marathon.

"The 'HOTTEST' marathon in the world!!" (about: 2003)
6-10 previous marathons
| 4-5 Singapore International Marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Very hot - poor starting gates with fun runners, 10km and half marathon runners and marathoners all sneaking in with one another. As for the spectators... they melt - thus if any of the organizers read this, please consider a double '8' course of 4x10.5km loops N,S,E,+W through the national stadium. Something for the spectators to see and be able to sit in the shade and a boost for the runners.

"Great ! But There's Still Room For Improvement" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Thanks to Standard Chartered for the excellent effort in organizing this event. As compared to years back with Exxon-Mobil (old sponsor), this is a far cry (look at the comments for year 2001 & before). This is my first marathon. I clocked 6 hours and 40 minutes, which ranks me in the bottom 93% of marathon runners. Yet I am very happy with my time, as I have achieved this feat without much training - my objective was just to complete the race. (Before I started the race, I had already made up my mind: I must make it to the finishing line no matter what, even if I had to crawl, I would do it). Prior to this, the farthest I had ever run is 6 Km, though I had the experience of running 10Km - but that was 10 years ago. The satisfaction was even greater due to the fact that I have put on almost 15 Kg these 10 years. Room for improvement: The first 20 Km is commendable. Every 5 Km there is something to drink. 20 Km - 30 Km : No drinks, no isotonic drinks - especially Esplanade - on that stretch. 30 Km - End : No drinks, no isotonics. Marina Bay: that stretch should have more drink stations every 2 Km. Runners need more drinks at the end, not the first 15Km. By that time, the sun had risen, and that makes the run difficult. Also, that last stretch of 10 Km seems very quiet. Overall, very well organized. I will be running in the Gold Coast Marathon this July 4th. Looking forward to clocking below 5 and half hours. Come Dec 2004, I hope that I can improve my time to below 4 and a half hours. Thanks again for a job well done! This experience widened my horizons about marathon running, and gave me a taste of the humbling experience of life!

"Supporters required!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Good (has improved): Publicity More participants More awareness (less people asking, what is a marathon?) More supporters (though there were some who came because of free t-shirt and breakfast) Nice website Accurate results Fast results on the web Fast photos (though expensive) Convenient expo location Good weather Road are closed for many hours Those who were trying to get to the Esplanade will have to pay attention to the road closure for THE MARATHON in the future. So many banners put up and they didn't even see them. Not so good: There should be pre- (carbo-loading party, paid) and post-race parties No Friendship Run on Saturday followed by breakfast More stalls should be set up at the expo Not enough variety of souvenirs T-shirts are too big for most runners Not enough energy drink along the course Nobody hands out the power gel, needed that very badly at the two points mentioned in the booklet No mentioned of 'must' use marathon bag for baggage deposit, organizer almost did not accept my cold storage plastic bag. If only marathon blue bag is accepted, please mention that in the booklet. No directional signs to the baggage trucks in the morning. Went round and round the stadium to find those trucks, by the time I found them, they were closed. I had to beg the driver to accept my cold storage bag just before the gun time. Almost broke my leg running up and down looking for the trucks. Immediately disqualified all runners who start before their set gun time. This can be known from their chip timing. If there are no XS t-shirts at the end point, offer the next smaller size (small). No runners want to come back to face a dead pan 'helper' saying, 'no more XS'. And then, what? Where are the supporters? Sleeping? (Ha ha). Volunteers in uniform sitting around chatting in a group. What do they get paid for? Are they there for the free t-shirts and lunch? Along the Marina Bay, the helpers should help the St. John's get some heat rub which had run out long ago. Place some more mats along the way to prevent cheating Start earlier, anyway there is no public transportation operating before 6 AM w/o surcharge. Hated the Marina Bay route. Again, no directional signs to the baggage claim trucks at the end point. Poor souls who have to come back and remove their shoe laces to take out their chip. They could use a wire-tie. Helpers can just cut that off to retrieve the chip. But considering a lot of people who think the chip might come out after tying with plastic wire tie, most will tie into their shoelace. Imagine if the marathon grows to 30-40,000 participants... everyone standing around removing shoelaces??! if they can still stand properly...

"Run out of sports drink at the ending point" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I have posted my comment earlier but I forget to include something. I agree with JP from Malaysia. The sports drink is difficult to open. At the finishing point at Padang they run out of sports drink at about 11:15 am, when I went back to have my second serving of sports drink.

"Time to run at night" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This was my first full marathon. I had run the 1/2 marathon in `02, so knew roughly what to expect concerning the heat. I mostly agree with the other comments concerning organization, course and spectators. The sports drink was really bad however and the power gel was supposed to be available at 21KM marker but didn't show up until the 32KM. Finally, given the heat in this country, Stan Chart should seriously consider starting the race at 6:00 PM instead of 6:00 AM or earlier.

"1st timer had a good time" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Positives: - Organization - Support - Post-race massage - Chip timing - Marathon-photos - Up to date website info - Online post-race performance analyses Needs Improvement: - An earlier start, please. 5am would be great - More cheering/support needed in the last 8K (toughest part of the course) - Isos not seen in the final 10K. The bottles are also difficult to open. Perhaps Gatorade next year? - Marathon expo quite sparse. NB booth should accept credit card purchases. There should be displays of route or even talks on the race, etc... While some of these were available to Singaporeans, most foreigners only arrived 1 day before race day - Post-race runners' tent can be larger

"Need an earlier start" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Very well organized. Nice scenic course. Cheer groups were great. More isotonic drinks needed. I really hope next year's race could start at 5am. |
