"Wonderful, Challenging Experience" (about: 2007)

This was the first half marathon I ran and it was a wonderful, challenging experience. The spectators were wonderful and so supportive. The cheers and support really helped me make it to the finish line without collapsing.

Prepare yourself because the course is very hilly. I do not remember that many hills during the training run. I did not do many hill workouts so the hills got the best of me around mile 11 but a runner encouraged me to keep going and I was able to finish at a time of 1:56.

This was a wonderful experience and a great achievement for me. I recommend it to anyone.

"Only a few changes needed to be a great race!" (about: 2007)

I ran Baltimore in 2002 and then again this year in '07. The course is a good one. The elevation is given to you ahead of time...so prepare for the late hills. I didn't find them to be all that bad since I knew what was coming. Running through the Inner Harbor is awesome...great crowds, etc. Ft. McHenry is definitely a great addition as well! My only major complaint is in regards to aid stations just after the full marathon merged with the half-marathon. There were at least 2-3 stops where I had to wait for a water or gatorade to be poured for me (or I poured it myself). Those particular stations were not at all prepared for the large crowd of runners. I ended up missing some much needed gatorade/water out of pure frustration. I hope the race directors seriously consider changing the start time or location of the half to avoid simiarl problems. Why not start everyone together???

"Dem hills hurt!" (about: 2007)

Well organized marathon, with great water stops, port-o-potties, police control. Lots of scenery and fan support. But three loops through the Inner Harbor area are two too many, and there's just no excuse for making marathoners climb hills from mile 15 to mile 23. Please redo the course, and get the hills knocked out early.

No criticism possible - just a huge, HUGE thank you to the thousands of volunteers and neighborhood spectators for their incredible support of a bunch of sweaty strangers.

Organization was superb, and so were the Baltimore police - they kept traffic at bay for runners/walkers and were polite & professional. I liked that my hotel (Renaissance Harbor) was centrally located and I could walk to Expo and start/finish lines. Spectators for back of packers like myself were not plentiful but very spirited - a big thank you to the neighbors who handed out tissues to racers like this Floridian who was not used to such cold temps in Oct. Medal was awesome. Yes, there were hills, lots of them, but still I PRd so I didn't think they were too much of a problem. And I enjoyed seeing the neighborhoods of Baltimore and Ft. McHenry. All in all, a terrific race -thank you to the organizers, Police, and people of Baltimore.

"Great race, but with a lot of little mistakes" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Baltimore Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 2

It is very a good race, the course is not as hilly as it may sounds, and spectators were great; but I have some little unsatisfactory comments.

I did not get any Gatorade at station one, they said they were not ready yet to give it out (I was running with 3:10 pace group). There had no gels at mile 22-23 as the race booklet said. Vaseline stick/cup was not handed out, they put them a table and expect you can grab them yourself as you run by. I saw those aid persons standing around with their hands in their pant pockets listening to music.

At the finish, where were all the bagels? Why y'all only have those silly breakfast bars? If I were you, I would rather to have 20 bagels than a cup of weak beer.

What is the point if I can't celebrate my finish with my family and friends at the finish line and why the hell would they block them outside the finish/ staging area? If you block them outside the chip collecting area, that's okay. But I can't even see them until I got out the entire area?!

Once I got out of that area, if I wanted to get more bananas and water for myself, then I couldn't get right back in. Come on!!! I'd never seen any race that does that.

What do you mean by massage? If I knew it was that bad, I would rather have gone home to take an ice bath as soon as I finished. She didn't know what the heck she was doing and she put her knee on my black toes; it was so painful. The race was great, but all these little things are very bad. Runner bag check is good, but why the hell that you can't provide bag for everyone? All the races I been in, they gave bag to the runners; it is not to that much money to give a bag if you look at the amount we paid for the race. One last thing, if you don't know, the women's changing area was open without someone guards it; I saw a couple of guys 'confused' who walked right into it.

"Nice 'Small' feel to it." (about: 2007)

After the BIG fall races, this was nice to have short lines and small numbers of people around. Staff was very friendly. The later water stations seemed to be running a little behind. I wish the hills were not so late in the race. But being from Houston makes any hill an issue. Running around Ft. McHenry was very nice. Not too many spectators but the scenery was nice. When an ambulance had to go through the cops were polite and even a little apologetic for having to stop us. I intend to it run again.

"Great weekend!" (about: 2007)

Overall this race was one of the best I've run. The "hills" everyone talks about are minimal. The course is scenic. There are lots of water and aid stations. Really fun city. I never do a marathon twice but I'd recommend it to anyone. My only complaint is that they didn't advertise a first-timer's prize for women finishing in under 4:20. My daughter missed out on prize money because she didn't register at the expo. There were others from the group I ran with who were first-timers, and they didn't hear about it either. Make sure you look for it if you're running your first marathon.

"Great course but organization could be better" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Baltimore Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Pros

1) The weather for the race was perfect!! I came out to run from San Diego and these were the best running conditions I have ever raced in.
2) Beautiful medal, and the Under Armour shirt is awesome!
3) I ran the 1/2 marathon, and the course is great. If you prepare for the hills and build up your legs, you'll do great! I PRed on the course.
4) Easy parking at the expo.

Cons

1) The expo was disorganized and they had us running from one end of the stadium to the other so we would walk past all the vendors.
2) More water stops! I only ran the half but I feel bad for the marathoners who need to hydrate.
3) More signs designating bag check in.
4) The family meet-up spots were HORRIBLE!! I cannot stress how bad it was. Get more signs! Also the family meet-up spots for the relay runners made it hard to exit the finish line area as well.
5) Waiting 45 minutes for the light rail train to get back to the car after running the race was the worst.
6) Not enough volunteers at the finish line area.

I would definitely run it again and recommend this race. No where near the high level of organization as in the Rock N' Roll Marathon in San Diego, but fun nonetheless.

Pluses, Just to name a few:
(1)Outstanding job done by Baltimore's Law Enforcement in containing the traffic. (2) Well Organized (3) Plenty food...you had your choice of what to eat (4) Nice scenery including Ft. McHenry (5) Aids stations well organized!!!! (6) Expo: easy in and easy out.

Minuses (1) Would have been nice to have more music on the course (2) Since race day was on a Saturday, it may have been a good idea to start the race at 6:00 or 7:00AM instead.
