COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I had heard about how tough and hilly this course was supposed to be, and was a little nervous. And, yeah, it was pretty rough - that hill up Hillen Road around mile 20, which goes straight up, was brutal - I remember a guy headed back down the hill as we headed up who nodded at us ruefully and said 'Good luck!' Gulp! However - I had an amazing time at this, my first marathon, because it was a gorgeous travelogue, on foot, through the city where I was born. Starting and ending at Camden Yards made my heart full, as did seeing the canons at Ft. McHenry, the fans at Clifton Park who, as I requested, greeted my sister, who was running behind me, by name as they saw her, and the girl dressed as a tiger pumping her fists to 'Eye of the Tiger.' My city is a friendly, warm, beautiful place, and the marathon was well-stocked with Utz chips, enough water for the slower runners, and the Baltimore Massage School people. I'd do something about that last hill, and about the awkwardness of the halfers entering in the middle. Otherwise...amazing.

"Great crowd, great race... great hills!!!" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 That was my first race ever and I'm glad I picked it. I did the 1/2, as part of my training for Richmond and it was indeed great training. The hills were tough but I was not surprised (I had read the reviews before the race). So, knowing it, I did my homework training uphill in a treadmill for 2 weeks before the race. It worked great, since I felt awesome while going up the hills. It felt like being challenged and succeeding! Loved the crowd support! It made my experience even more memorable. Plan to be back this year.

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Wow!! Was this a tough one!! The expo was great. Course parking perfect!! Plenty of spots! Expo was nice. Terrific Under Armour long-sleeve shirt!! If you are a fan of hills... then this course is for you!! Water and food was a bit of an issue at the end... but it happens sometimes.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I ran this as a training run for the Philly Marathon, but did the whole 26.2, walking the first 3. I agree the hills were a little tough in 16-23, but I'm not sure what Baltimore could do about that. I thought all of the aid stations were great and the race organization and website were far superior to the Philly Marathon. Crowd support was good where there were people, but many places were light on crowds along the course. They did run out of water at the end of the course for about 30 minutes, but brought in a bunch of bottled water until they could fix the situation. I'm under the belief that you have to be ready for this situation, so I had my own recovery food and fluids available at the end.

"have no plans to do again or recommend to anyone" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 3 This was my first marathon experience. I am glad that I decided to do another one 3 weeks later or I don't think I would want to do any more after Baltimore. I found it very desolate at the Ft. McHenry part, and the bathrooms were sparse for the course. I did not enjoy the half-marathoners merging at the time and place that they did. It was difficult to weave around walkers who were 4 across. The aid stations in the second half were hard to make it through as well. It was quite hot that day with temps in the 80's and humidity in the 80% range, so having no water at the finish was unforgivable. I went with a group of marathoners who all would not recommend this to anyone else. I was lucky that one of the girls that was faster than me had her ice bag left from icing her leg. That was what I got to drink! If you want to run with the lack of water and organization at the finish then I suggest this race, but I dont think that any race shirt is worth the aggravation.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 First off, I had a BRILLIANT time running this race. Granted it was my first marathon ever but I have done many races, 1/2's, 10-milers and such and the spectator support was GREAT. This is a race that everyone should do, at least once just to say you ran it. Granted the roads are a little dodgy here and there but what do you expect in a city? Oh and the hills, come on... the hills are nothing; you are either ready for it or you aren't. No matter what race you do you will always find 'something' that you don't like. Try it for yourself and make your own decision.

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 You have a delightful and hospitable team organizing the events. Some sections were terrific (e.g. Fort McHenry, Camden Yards). But there are many marathons out there, some worth doing multiple times, but unless this is your hometown, once here is enough. Warning to just-for-fun hobbyists: the hills from 16-22 are a bit untimely, and the scenery, percentage wise, is in my opinion more often ordinary compared to some other northeastern city marathons. Sure, do Baltimore once, then you decide.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The course was setup well and had great crowd support. I especially liked all the cheering at mile 13 before the half began. The expo was decent, and the Under Armour shirts are great. I would definitely recommend this marathon, but be prepared for some hills.

"gotta love those hills, but I'll be back!" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Yes, there is room for improvement but enough with the complaining, people! You knew it was going to be hilly, you knew it might be warm, you had to figure organization wouldn't be perfect. But in the scheme of things, you're not going to keel over because you didn't get ice water within 5 minutes of finishing or because there were a couple of dead rats on the course. I would have to agree with the complaints on the 1/2 marathon merge, however. It was frustrating that late in the race to have to weave around 1/2 marathon walkers strolling along 4 across. I love this race. I ran the 1/2 last year because I wasn't ready for the full, and I'm glad I waited. Those hills were a challenge but not unfair. I love the race shirts - finally, a shirt I can wear for training! Medals were better than last year and massages were much appreciated. Very happy to see the crab soup tent this year. In a sentence, this is a race that has a lot of room for improvement but seems to get better every year. And keep the hills coming!

"NEEDS LOTS OF IMPROVEMENT" (about: 2005)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 Fort McHenry was the only redeeming part of the course. Why they choose to start the half marathon later, then join the marathoners for a congested finish, is beyond me. Lack of water at several stops and at the finish is inexcusable. |
