"Good First Marathon for Little Rock" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

The marathon was well orgainzed and the people were great. The course was exciting with all the hills until the out and back along the river. That was a hard run because no spectators could get back there. Without that stretch the course will be a 5. When Little Rock has a few more marathons the spectators will line up to watch.

"Great run for the first run, it will get better!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This is my 5th marathon. I run to finish and to enjoy all that marathons have to offer. Little Rock was great to see historical sites and beautiful settings. This was a race for every pace.

I would like to thank the race organizers, volunteers, runners, and spectators. Everyone was so nice and supportive. The Little Rock Marathon was my first Marathon in the U.S..I have run others but mainly in Eastern Europe. I can say that this was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Thank you to everyone and I hope to come back next year for fun and racing.

"Much Southern Hospitality" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

An excellent organized inaugural marathon. I was bowled over my the Southern Hospitality of everyone. Good course, not the flattest I've ever run, but fair and scenic. Pretty good spectator support for a first time marathon, I'm sure it will grow along with this marathon. I will be recommending this race to others. And that was the biggest race medal I've ever received, and this was my 43rd marathon. I almost fell over when it was put over me. My neck got sore wearing for more than ten minutes. ;)
Thanks again.

"Great Walking Marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Walkers always have to deal with people registered as walkers deciding to run. But, this marathon and staff went above and beyond what most marathons even consider offering for walkers..the eight hour cutoff was amazing, and having walking awards was a very nice touch. THe support was wonderful. So many races have dropped walking awards of any type because there are always complaints, and too often those who complain never consider giving their time to help the situation.

In all honesty is is up to us-those who want to walk events and take our training as walkers seriously to help fix any snags we might see! If we think that more information is needed at the expo-then WALKERS needs to be willing to be there as a volunteers to help with that task. If a walker thinks someone is misinformed & doesn't understand that registered walkers are not suppose to run, then the ball is in our court to kindly inform them.

I've walked seven marathons and three halves & have only praise for the staff and volunteers of this race. It was great to see some wonderful racewalkers on the course like Deo and Bill. We all compete against ourselves, and I appreciate the Little ROck Marathon for affording me the opportunity to do so.

"Great for a first timer" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

As a 1st timer that was a great experience -- except for the humidity. Please be certain that all the volunteers know how important they were in getting us through. I couldn't have done it without the water, gatoraid, fruit, gels & encouragement. Same goes for the crowds.
Y'all did a great job organizing the event. I look forward to it next year.

"Bravo Volunteers" (about: 1999)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

My biggest thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who kept the traffic at bay and made sure we were all fed and watered well.
It was very inspiring to here 'It is well with my soul' while crawling up Kavanaugh hill. Thank you for the church bell music.
Also, thank you to all the people who were there with encouraging words, fellow marathoners, people who cheered and passersby who honked.
I was blessed with a beautiful first marathon experience by meeting my old high school track team mate ( Karin Ward Dagenbach) , hot legs training group from the women can run clinic, and most importantly got to finish a marathon with my two fantastic sisters, Leslie Boone and Beth Moore.
Props up to everyone!

"Great First Effort" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Hot, humid, and hilly I expected. I didn't expect how well organized and enthusiastic this race would be. Two t-shirts, big, heavy medals, and enough food for lunch at the finish. Plenty of water and Gatorade--always worry about this for a first-time race--- even the good, blue Gatorade. The organizers tried very hard to make this a memorable and first-rate race.
The course is hard. Be ready. Rolling hills the first eight miles, then a long steady climb until mile twelve, where you get a fast downhill for about 2/3s of a mile. Then flat but hot for ten miles, and a really mean, steep climb at about mile 24 that lasts for about a mile. Do hill training.
This race is very relay and walker friendly.
Okay, it was too hot and humid in May, but next year the race will be in March, so only the hills will be a problem.

"I'll be back next year" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

One of the best marathons I have run. The first 12 miles are very hilly. I made the mistake of going out too fast not thinking about the hills. Last half of the course is flat, one hill near the end. Little Rock did a great job hosting their 1st marathon.

"Outstanding experience with one minor glitch" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This is my fourth marathon with previous experience in Honolulu, Dallas, and Oklahoma City.

Plus - The organization was first rate and the marathon committee is to be commended on the excellent job they did putting the race together. The finisher's medallion is truly a disco plate and is not your average coin-shaped pendant.

Plus - The spectators were awesome. Along the course, they supported you with encouragement, mints, Jolly Ranchers, oranges and water in between the official aid stations. The race committee made a great choice in printing the runners' names on the bib number. It's a lot more motivating to here someone call out your name instead of, 'way to go 392!'

Plus & Minus - The stretch out and back through the park and bike path was restricted to vehicular traffic - good for the runners, but this meant no spectators cheering you on through that portion. Look forward to the water stations for cheering.

Minus - I usually do not stay at the race hotel and the Doubletree in Little Rock is an example of the reason why. Check-in was supposed to be at 3:00 pm but my room wasn't ready until after 5:00. Even then, it took another 15 minutes for the desk clerk to get the information pulled up on her terminal. They also did not authorize a late checkout without paying for half a day (hmm, late check in through the hotel's error should equal late checkout for the customer? No? Oh well, won't be staying here again).

Plus - The aid stations and relay points were well operated. Almost all had water and Gatorade available and some had oranges and hard candy. The one that had CarBoom gel was located too close to the finish line, but better some than none. For those of you used to PowerGel and Gu, CarBoom is an acquired taste. Seemed kind of gritty to me.

Plus - A good challenging course with a nice long hill up Kavanaugh. Flat through the tough portions but who put that hill between mile 25 and 26? Thank goodness it's almost over with at that point!

God bless the Little Rock Marathon committee and all those who participated in this year's race; runners, volunteers, and spectators.
