Overall, a great morning for a run. Used this marathon as training for Chicago. Plenty of water sports drink/Gu. Great crowd support. The out-and-back was easy on the legs.

"Flat, But Boring" (about: 2007)

The race was very flat, but also very boring. Very few spectators, only at the end of the race. The course changed to bypass a hill and run more into downtown St. Charles, but that was not the case. The course ran along the highway and the Kady Trail.

They need to change their drink to Gatorade or PowerAde. The G2O or whatever is handed out tastes very watery; I had to take the water instead.

Traffic was terrible arriving - not sure why they changed the start, the family arena was perfect. This was my third and final time running this race, unless the course and start change.

"Lots of fun" (about: 2007)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 Lewis & Clark Marathon (MO)s
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

Overall, a great course, great support, and lots of fun. Over 5,000 people ran, but only 850 for the full marathon. Be ready for crowded conditions at the start, but a very thinned out second half. Weather was very nice - 60-70 all day and cloudy.

The course: The first half was a standard street course, starting at the concert pavilion in Earth City. Nice scenery, especially crossing the bridge across the Missouri River. Very flat; the only real hill was the on-ramp to the bridge. Second half was an out-and-back stretch on the Katy Trail - a railroad track converted to a gravel bike trail. Very forgiving on the feet, and pretty shady.

The full marathon splits off right at the finish for the half, so watch your pace as the halfers push for their final mile.

Support: Plenty of water and sports drink on the way, and plenty of great volunteers to hand it out, so no problems there. The out-and-back second half allowed them to use the same stations twice; with only 850 full marathoners this was plenty and no crowding.

Crowds: Sporadic for the first half, some areas with nice little crowds, and long stretches with none. Second half had almost no spectators except for volunteers, but the out-and-back stretch meant plenty of support from other runners. Nice crowd at the finish. Even though 80% of runners did the half, they managed to keep plenty of food for people who finished later.

Bad points: Around mile 6, cars were actually driving ON THE COURSE. Maybe add some better markings to keep runners on the left and cars on the right. Also, the
start was delayed for 15 minutes due to "police request."

"Great Race!" (about: 2007)

This was a fun race. Organization was superb, the course was mostly flat, and the weather was perfect this year. This was my first half marathon and I had a great experience. Will do it again next year.

"Bring back the hill" (about: 2007)

I enjoyed running over the 370 bridge during the first half of the course. I was grateful for the break from the pavement for the second half of the race. However, the out-and-back loop on the Katy Trail was very tough on the mind and the Greensbottom section of the Katy Trail is unimpressive. Why not bring back the 364 bridge hill during the second half of the course and either add more running through scenic St. Charles or add more running over the 364 bridge (using the paved Creve Cour bike trail for some of the miles)? Still, a great race put on by the Fleet Feet team!

"Hot Race" (about: 2004)

Temperatures get warm - sun comes out quickly. Race is two loops. After the first loop, you are running alone (the half marathoners finish). The small finisher medals have a paper sticker on the back that tells the year. Great aid stations. Again, second loop is lonely.

"Good run; flat except for one hill" (about: 2006)

I have run this course several times since its beginning. It has really grown in the past years, but the organization is still top-notch. Two things I would change: I think the field has grown too large to handle the trail section so I would move it onto the roads more. Also there should be a clock at the halfway point for the benefit of those who do not have stopwatches with them.

"Great training run (half marathon) for Chi" (about: 2006)

This year I ran the half marathon to get ready for the Chicago Marathon. As usual, the setup and execution of the event was fantastic! My only issue was with allowing bike riders on the course. I don't know if Fleet Feet can stop them, but it was an issue; from the eight riders from an older generation that didn't know what to do with all the runners coming at them; to the high speed rider who ran head on into a runner (lady) just south of the Page Bridge. They both went down; I only hope she did not get hurt to bad and was able to finish the race. Something needs to be done to close the trail off to bike riders or move the race. No one should be getting hurt in a marathon! Please fix this issue before someone sues and stops the race for the future.

"better this year" (about: 2006)

2 previous marathons | 2 Lewis & Clark Marathon (MO)s
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I ran the half again this year and though I thought last year was good, I think this year was better! It was very well organized from packet pick-up to parking; and there were more participants and there were more spectators this year. There were plenty of water stops and potties, and lots of food! My only complaint was the high humidity, but only nature can fix that! It also was a PR for me... it doesn't get any better than that!

"geared towards the half" (about: 2006)

1 previous marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This is a nice, flat course, with a nice view of Saint Charles and the Katy Trail overlooking the Missouri River. It's a good starter course for anyone wishing to say they completed a marathon or half. Anyone looking for a marathon time will need to be disciplined enough to do it on their own, due to few runners or spectators for the second lap.
