"Hot weather makes this a tough marathon!" (about: 2000)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 The organization of the race was excellent, especially the transportation to and from participating hotels and event functions. However, this race should be moved to a May start due to excessive heat. Even the defending champion and course record holder from Kenya couldn't finish in the heat! While this course was billed as flat, it was not. There were a number of long uphill grades run along major highways. Lastly, the sports drink provider, Ultima, was completely undrinkable! In this kind of heat, it is critical to have a well known and palatable drink! Please provide a different drink that appeals to a wider audience next year, like Gatorade. The volunteers were WONDERFUL, with plenty of fluid stations, and the music and cheerleaders were a nice distraction from the heat.

"Smooth as ice!" (about: 1999)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Ran the 2nd RnR ('99), so the logistics were great. Water every 1.5 miles or so, GU at 2-3 spots and energy drink at 1/2 the water stations. They even were passing out vaseline after mile 20! There are spectators lining most of the course, and with 20,000 runners you're never alone. Can't give my opinion on the last 6 miles of the race, I just remember that it hurt. Liked it so much, I'm running again this year.

"The 1999 Edition is the one to pay attention to" (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 The 1999 Edition of the Rock-n-Roll Marathon was a completely different story from it's first incarnation. 1998 was a learning year, and the event grew from 0 to 20,000 with no prior history. If you are thinking about this event, go for it. The 1999 version was as great as the 1998 version was bad. Elite Racing has it's act together. This race was awesome for nearly everyone who ran it in 1999. Look for overcast skies and comfortable running weather (90% probability), and no rain (99% probability). 40 bands for 24 band stands (continuous rockin' good music). LOTS of water now. Great spot to finish. Relatively fast course. 2000 should be even better. I work scores of finish lines each year supplying those brightly printed mylar finish line blankets (Heatsheets), and I see most of you finish, share your comments and thoughts, and have a good impression of how it went. I also coach the Jeff Galloway Program here in SF, and have input from our members who ran. You can take it to the bank. This marathon is a class act. If I didn't have to work it, I'd be running in it myself.

"1st year ('98) was poor, heard '99 was much better" (about: 1998)
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 Not a good event in '98. A very late start made for a hot/sunny run, combine this with difficulty getting water in the first 1/3 of the race and there were lots of runners 'hitting the wall'. The theme was great, but the bands every mile were all too often on break. For a scenic town, the course was boring...too many highway miles. The concert that evening was GREAT! I heard '99 was much better. Would I do it again? Probably not, but not because of a bad experience in '98, more because there are so many other good choices.

"worst race I,ve ever run" (about: 1998)
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 I know it was the 1st year of the race, but the lack of orginization was inexcusable! 45 min late to start, no water for 7 miles, no transportation back to the hotel after. It seemed to this runner that this race was put on exclusivly by businessmen, as every time I turned around they had there hand on my wallet. The course was nothing to brag about either: the last severel miles was spent sucking down exhaust fumes by the freeway.

"I enjoy running in San Deigo the weather is great!" (about: 2000)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran Rock-n-Roll Marathon last year, had a great race. The course is fast and very scenic. The music with the Rock-n-Roll Bands at every mile is very intertaining, and keeps you going to the finish. I will be back this year, and I,am sure it will be better then last year! |
