"Small event, but great course for a PR!" (about: 2010)

At first I was very disappointed with this marathon. The expo wasn't... all it really was was a tent in a parking lot for packet pick-up. The morning of the race wasn't too much better; however, there was lots of parking in Bass Pro Shop's parking lot and racers were able to wait inside the building to stay warm til the start of the race. The half and full marathon split just before the 1-mile mark, but I actually enjoyed running with just other marathoners more than having the half marathoners split away at, say, mile 10. And the course was fantastic! Almost completely flat and very fast! (I ran a 3:31, breaking my PR by over 9 minutes). There was a small amount of community support; however, at almost every intersection the race director had a volunteer posted to help direct racers in the correct direction and seeing that many people helped. Post-race amenities were good as well. They had cartons of milk, which were delicious, and I only had to wait 5 minutes for a massage!

Last year's course was much better. I did not like running on the streets, as I had to avoid cars that were not happy about sharing the road with us runners. Got honked at and yelled out, and smelling the exhaust was horrible!!! Several runners mentioned that they were nearly hit as well. I would sooner have stayed on the trails that we ran last year!! The organization was incredible, and I know it is not possible for the directors of the race to control motorist. But last year's course was beautiful, peaceful and much better!!! Also, too many hills in the beginning of the race made it rough!

Lots and lots of turns on this course, but I enjoyed the ample parking, restrooms and friendly atmosphere provided by this race. Really a flat course! Thanks for giving me a chance to finish a marathon after bonking at mile 17 of Chicago!

I live around Springfield and I am really disappointed that the city of Springfield or Bass Pro couldn't coordinate better traffic control. If cities the size of Seattle can shut down sections of the interstate for a marathon, then Springfield should be able to close off a few small areas for a few hours on a Sunday morning. One older man was driving right toward us and didn't give us a second look. If we wouldn't have moved, we would have been roadkill. People were driving past us going 45-50 mph. Very disappointed. There were also 65 turns in the marathon course. As a Springfieldian, I'm embarassed.

This was my first marathon, and my only goal was to complete it. Tens years before, I weighed over 220 pounds; running this marathon was an completion to my journey! I had no expectations of placing, let lone winning. I just wanted to finish. I DID, in 3:45. I won the Masters, and qualified for Boston (my next marathon). I loved the course; it was very scenic and very enjoyable to run. The event was very well organized all the way from signing up, to packet pick-up, to the start, to the course, to the finish line! I look forward to running this marathon again!

This is my third year for the half marathon. I think 2008 was the best as far as the expo portion. The 2009 edition was the best, as far as the pasta dinner. At first, I was a little worried, when I realized the group was so small. That quickly changed with the friendliness of the guest speakers. What great guys. I would like to see if a female could be found to talk in this type of format as well. The race itself is beautiful. I am always so impressed with the attitudes and encouragement of other racers and volunteers. The bridge is always my biggest worry and accomplishment with this race. The police and volunteers working the intersections are super. The mud was an issue this year, with spots being slick, but with all the rain prior to the race, it was understandable. I would like to see hamburgers and other things to eat at the end besides eggs. However, bless the "smoothie" folks. Those are the first thing I look for after this race. The water stations and goodies at each station were great as usual. The pretzels were a real treat at the last station. I'll be back next year. I would like to have half-marathon results posted as well.

"course congestion on the trails" (about: 2009)

There was a lot of conflict with the half marathon walkers and marathon runners on the trail for about three miles late in the race. I set a PR on the course, so I won't complain too much, but other marathons do a much better job of providing the marathon runners clear running room. I do not intend to run this again next year. They did several things well, but the course map was not one of them, and it didn't have an elevation profile, which is needed to attract a more competitive field.

My first time running Bass Pro. It's a mixed bag. The huge mile markers were great. Although uncontrollable, the weather was awesome. It warmed up quicker than I was dressed for, but it was sunny and beautiful. There were definitely more hills than advertised, but none that were too daunting. I didn't like that the route was two out-and-backs, and included quite a bit of concrete. The fuel stops were staffed by prepared and enthusiastic volunteers. The other runners were the BEST part! I don't think I've ever done a race where everyone encouraged EACH OTHER so much! That was definitely a boost. There were a few areas where it was hard to tell where to go; you had to follow a small arrow painted on the ground or follow the trail of cups people had left behind! Most disappointing was the expo, or lack of. It was basically a packet pick up and the shirts (although tech) were HUGE! I got an extra small (I am a medium-sized gal) and it is still going to have to be a sleep shirt! Bass Pro was neat and having a Starbuck's RIGHT THERE was awesome! The MC at the finish line was awesome - very fun and celebratory. The prizes for the winners and age group awards were somewhat unique. I might be back if they change the route. I heard that the ending used to be in the Bass Pro; that would be neat!

The best part of the race was the MC at the finish line. He was awesome and encouraging, welcoming everyone home from a run. The Bass Pro Shop was unbelievable.

This marathon was my first marathon! I thought the course was a challenging one. More rolling hills, I thought. Overall, I would run this again next year!! Couldn't find the food after the run.
