"First 16 miles are amazing!" (about: 2010)

Wonderful support and good communication beforehand. Only 2 things I would change:I love my Gatorade! And, spruce up the shirts. The cooler the shirt, the more I wear it, the more people see it, the bigger the race is next year. Definitely running it again!

"It was everything they promised it would be." (about: 2010)

The course was challenging throughout, with lots of hills, some long climbs, and some very steep sections, both up and down. The scenery was gorgeous, and the support was great, with plenty of energetic and encouraging volunteers handing out bananas and pretzels just when you really needed them.

Communication before the event was thorough; packet pick up was smooth; and parking was easy.

A well done event on a beautiful course.

"As Advertised!" (about: 2010)

Beautiful course, great fans, and as we were told, a tough course; but I think that's what made this race special. Fix the plastic cups and you will have the perfect marathon! Thanks for the memories!

"For sure the hardest marathon in America" (about: 2010)

6-10 previous marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Having run two marathons in six months, including one last month, I chose the run the half. This was the hardest half I have run. However, the hills... er, mountains, come early. The grades are very steep going up Roanoke Mt. and going down Mill Mt. For their first race, the organizers did a great job.

"A beautiful beast of a marathon course" (about: 2010)

The course is beautiful and brutal, especially in the first 15 miles. There were a few odd turns, especially around the campground section, but otherwise a great layout. The marathon was well organized. The only thing I would changes would be to get rid of the plastic cups that you can't pinch to drink out of. Crowds were enthusiastic but sparse in the mountain sections. Overall, a great time and beautiful course; my calves are still thinking about it.

Do your hill work. 19(!) water stops. Great support. Beautiful. But yeah, do your hill work. Thanks for the wonderful experience, Roanoke!

"First-timer for the half!" (about: 2010)

For my first half-marathon ever, I had a wonderful experience! The course was well-organized, there was water and Hammer drinks available nearly every two miles, and the spectators/volunteers were amazing. It was advertised as "the most difficult marathon/half-marathon in the US" because of the mountain climb, but I didn't have any trouble. I think I may be hooked on running now.
