"Outstanding Race! Well done!" (about: 2010)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

My first long race; I did the 20-miler and had a great experience. Trying to get ready for my first Chicago Marathon and can't think of a better way to do it. I look forward to next year's event.

"Best Volunteers Ever!" (about: 2010)

Where did you get all of the awesome volunteers? Everyone was so friendly and helpful - plus there were a ton of them! Just one example: after shaking hands with one of the race organizers at the finish, I was met personally by a volunteer to lead me to the mylar blankets, water, etc. The course was great - so beautiful, shady and peaceful. The parking was plentiful; logistics were smooth. I will definitely be running this marathon next year. Great Job, everyone!

"Great for Spectator and Runner" (about: 2010)

I had friends and family who came to watch me run and they stated that they had such a fun experience following the race and found it super easy to follow my running. I also really enjoyed the volunteers and felt that they were super encouraging. The course was nice and shaded in many spots, even though it was hillier that I expected. A nice challenge though. Also, I thought that the aid stations were really well spaced. Thanks for a great experience!

"GREAT first race for FV" (about: 2010)

All was good! I ran the 20-miler in prep for Chicago. My only constructive comment is that the awards were wrong and I cannot get a response on the final awards from the RD. Otherwise, well run. Very lonely out in front, but otherwise, the volunteers were AWESOME!

"My first - but definitely not my last - FV maratho" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Fox Valley Marathon

I have a new favorite small-town marathon. This was so impressively done. The people behind the organization of the race should be proud. Every year I run Chicago where I always try to do a PR. But prior to that race, I like to run a "fun" marathon as practice. The FV marathon was perfectly timed for this (3 weeks before Chicago). In the past, I'd done the Quad Cities marathon, but it's too far for me, and it's only 2 weeks before the Chicago marathon (not enough recovery time). This course is great; the people are fantastic. I hate to end my positive review of this race with criticism but here's what I'd change: have a packet pickup in Chicago, provide less watery Gatorade, have more port-a-potties, re-route the course to avoid the hills/inclines,and avoid the awfully dry post-race bagels. That aside, this was the perfect race. My wife tells me that it was her best experience as a spectator, with lots of clearly marked places to watch and ample parking. I am very fortunate to have found out about it. See you next year!

"Great Inaugural Race!" (about: 2010)

As a veteran marathoner, I can be pretty critical of races - especially inaugural events. I have only one question for the race organizers: When is the 2011 event? I'll be back to compete! I liked the smaller and capped field of 1,200 participants. The marathon course was somewhat awkward with double-backs but they made up for that in fantastic scenery. Course support and spectators were great. Liked the food and drink at the finish but wished there was a bag to put all the goodies into so it was easier to carry. Mylar blankets could have used some tape so they stay on better. Also, a recycling bin for blankets would have been a nice touch. Overall rating: A.

"Great Event!" (about: 2010)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Fox Valley Marathon

This was a very well planned event. We arrived less than an hour before the start and were able to park (free) two blocks from the start/finish area. The wave start kept congestion to a minimum. The only place I was bothered by congestion was on the little side loop that crosses the river between Geneva and Batavia. This results in a short section of two-way traffic early in the race when the course is still fairly crowded. Otherwise the course was great. Lots of spectators at each of the suggested spectator locations and lots of quiet, peaceful time in between. This is a race organized by people who know what runners want.

"Organized" (about: 2010)

1 previous marathon | 1 Fox Valley Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon. The communication, website, packet pick-up, spectators, volunteers, water stops, and course were very well organized. It was a very intimate marathon because there were not many people. What an endeavor to have 3 races at once! But you would have never known because the communication was fluid and clear.

"Very well organized for an inaugural event!" (about: 2010)

I really enjoyed this marathon and I hope to do it again next year. One thing that I noticed was that a few of the mile markers seemed to be off. I run with a Nike Plus and the total mileage was almost exactly spot on, but some of the mile markers within the course were off - I think I started to notice it around 16 miles (some would be under the correct mileage and some would be over the correct mileage but somehow it ended up being correct in the end, so it's not really a big problem). The other thing that could've been better is the food. I wanted something a little more substantial then the normal bananas and bagels that you would get after a 5K. Also, not a huge deal but it would've made it even better.

"great weather" (about: 2010)

Overall, it was great, but these things can be improved: ugly shirt with better graphics. Extra clothes available were masculine-looking and too large; they need inspiration from chicks!!!! I would like to be able to run a race and choose my distance while running (cut off if tired, keep going if feeling great). No gels were available for me. They need music or bands or something on the course, as it's boring in parts.
