"Beat my expectations" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

Cons first. We arrived at 4:00pm on Friday and the expo was out of course directions and there was still 4 hrs to go. The woman I spoke with said that quite a few people picked up a handful of directions, maybe 1 or 2 per person should be the norm? Another woman went out of her way to find us one but no luck, really not a biggie because at the hotel we were able to download and print one. We were told that they had 1500 on hand. A few water stops we had to wait while they filled up more cups, another thing about the stops, some seemed to have water first then Gatorade, then it was Gatorade first then water, I'm not talking about the out and back legs.

Pros - 55-60 at the start and not a cloud in the sky all day long, about 65 when I finished. small race, but very well run overall. The course is very scenic, the park is gorgeous with all the fall colors. Volunteers were outstanding as well as the plentiful amount of police to keep us of us safe from traffic. Just a great day, thanks Indy.

"I prefer the Lawrence half to the 500 half in May." (about: 2007)

I actually participated in the half and also did the half in Louisville, KY on Sun. The half in Lawrence is a wonderful course with lots of vocal and hard-working volunteers at water stops and intersections. Packet pick-up is easy in and out and Sat. morning parking is plentiful if you leave early for the race start. This was my 3rd Indy half and 33rd half overall. It`s becoming my favorite of the 11 different venues I have walked. By the way, it is very walker friendly.

"Very nice/friendly small marathon" (about: 2007)

I had a great experience. The people were friendly and the course was nice. The run through the park was especially enjoyable. Some areas of the course didn't have spectators. The volunteers were nice and helpful and the picnic/cookout at the end was also fun. My kids also really enjoyed the 'kids Marathon' (25 miles at home and a 1 mile run on race day).

"Fall color, course variety, great people!" (about: 2007)

Came here for a mid-size fall event in order to qualify for Boston. It exceeded every expectation. Good mix of flat/hills, neighborhood/park made the time pass quickly. Fall colors this year were outstanding. People were great - volunteers and participants. The winding finish through the parkway takes your mind off of any discomfort. My partner and I will have fond memories as we both made our target. Only beef - being a St. Louis runner, I've come to expect the Bud truck to have a frosty one waiting for me at the finish. After all, it's not about the medal!

"Indy-good course, small town marathon" (about: 2007)

Sixth marathon. Traveled for the race. Small-town race (4,500 entrants, max). Out-and-back, but did not get bored - running in the burbs without a lot of crowd support. Flat course. Beautiful weather (cool/crisp to start, leaves changing...). Would do it again!

"Nice course, good organization, good size." (about: 2007)

This was a nice race and well organized, the volunteers we plentiful and friendly. Plenty of water stops. I was impressed by this Marathon because the race director had said that he expected 2700 runners and had 4700 runners. Indy seemed to handle these extra runners well. I finished in the middle of the marathoners.
The course was flat, but had just enough hills to allow for some strategic pace changes.(walking breaks) This time of year, the trees were pretty.
The home-made hamburgers at the finish were outstanding. I wish more Marathons did that, but many are too big to manage that.
This was a great way to get Indiana as a state. I decided to run Indy on Saturday and KY in Louisville on Sunday and I recommend this 2-states in 2 days combination for anyone who wants to try it. Both races are flat and easy and the number of runners is just nice.(not too many not too few)
Packet pickup was fast an easy, once I found the building.
Parking the morning of the race went smoothly and the traffic control during the race made this a very safe race.
Spectators were ok and I read others say that the local community has not been involved in the past, that was also true in 2007. Barely a mention of the race on the news channel I watched.
Come on Indy, you have a nice thing going on here, get behind it.

"ChicaGONE...to Indianapolis" (about: 2007)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Indianapolis Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I was excited to have a 'second chance' at running an October marathon. I only made it to mile 11 in the Chicago marathon because I was experiencing the effects of heat illness. This marathon was redemption, and I found the course, aid stops, and spectators envigorating. I would like to return to this race (hopefully still better trained) and am convinced that I am truly a 'small-town girl' when it comes to races/marathons. Thank you Lawrence/Indianapolis for this positive experience!

"All about the beautiful fall color, no frills!" (about: 2007)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Indianapolis Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

The course was beautiful this time of year winding through the Benjamin Harrison State Park. Plenty of water stops, race was well organized. Expo, goody bag, medal were very basic- as mentioned above no frills! As to be expected for a smaller marathon: spectators were few, enthusiastic ones were fewer. The start time was delayed 15-20 minutes due to traffic congestion not allowing adequate time for participants to reach the start linethis seemed unfair to those that did arrive in plenty of time & caused those running the last portion of the race to finish as the days heat of the unseasonable weather was peaking. Nice cookout at the end! All in all, a good small race! I enjoyed the experience!

"Well organized, scenic route, great value" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Indianapolis Marathon

This race is a little gem. With an early fee of only $45, it is a bargain. The race was well organized with lots of volunteers, aid stations and directions.

The Race Director is a solid runner, not a corporate marketing guru. This race is thus built around the runners and it shows! It is straightforward and just a great fall run.

In 2007, the weather worked out well. The sunny sky and spectacular fall foliage was wonderful to run through.

There were marathoners from all over the country that I talked with during the race. Obviously, people have discovered the race.

Can't say enough positive about the race. Will clearly be on my 'regular' list since it is well-run, well-timed, well-priced and nearby.

Thank you for a wonderful experience. I came down from Chicago to be able finally to complete my first marathon. Chicago is a terrific community/city/happening kind of experience. Indianaoplis was so special in its beautiful setting, community friendliness and support, and excellent organization. You should be very proud... thanks for a great experience.
