"GREAT FAMILY DESTINATION; FUN RACE" (about: 2007)

| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is the second year in a row that I have done this marathon and I'm glad I came back. The expo is small, but well organized and supported by friendly vendors and sponsors. The race has excellent shuttle bus transportation to the start and was well organized. Here is my one complaint: they need a better system (corrals?) to place people at the start. Our 3:10 pace group started with about a 9:00-minute first mile and we never really made it up. Good traffic control and a well marked course. Excellent post-race food and volunteer support for the runners. A great tech shirt, a really cool medal and again those great volunteers. I'll probably have to come back again next year just because I enjoy this race so much! Thanks for running with me, Greg from Georgia. Good luck!

"One of the most rewarding things I done in my life" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Everyone was very friendly. Every one of the police officers were friendly and encouraging. Although this was probably just another day in their job, they acted as though every person crossing their path was their best friend or family member. The volunteers who handed out water, Gatorade and snacks were friendly, encouraging and positioned just where they were needed. Kudos to them all! My only criticism would be that there should have been more "cheerleader" volunteers near the end of the race since that was where we needed them the most. After walking for more than 6 hours we needed all the encouragement we could get. Overall, though, it was a very good experience.

"Good Marathon" (about: 2007)

| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 This is a flat, fast course. It continues to grow each year, as it is a well-done race. It was nice to see the expo much larger than the last time I ran this race 2 years ago. The only complaint I had was with the accuracy of the mile markers, particulary at the beginning of the race. I went from a 7:37 first mile, to a 5:55 second, to a 4:40 third, and an 8:55 fourth. This made it very difficult to settle into a pace as I often use the markers as a guide until I establish a marathon rhythm. The rest of the event was very well done.

"Solid Fast Race - PR Course" (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I ran the marathon this past weekend. The course is fast and flat, the race was well organized and the weather was good. I'll definitely be back again next year. Things that can be improved on - parking situation: the entrances to the parking area they told us to use in the pre-race literature weren't open, causing 15-minute delays in parking. Some of the early mile markers (1, 3 and some others) were way off, but the splits were correct everywhere they had a clock (every 2 miles). Overall a very solid race that is well run and on a PR course. Not much more you can ask for in a marathon.

"Great race" (about: 2007)

| 6+ Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I would like to thank everyone that had a part in this race. I've run all 10 marathons here, and every year I think it gets better. I was hoping for a little more recognition for the 24 runners who had completed all of the marathons here, but then again I run because I enjoy it not because I want someone to recognize me. See you all next year if the Lord continues to bless.

"Fantastic first-time marathon!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was a great first-time experience for me, beginning with the expo, which was well organized. The volunteers along the course were very supportive. The drinks were plentiful and the food at 16 and 22 were great. They had all flavors of GU and lots of fruit. Very organized event with great beer and massages at the finish!! See you in 2008!!! Keep it up, organizers!

"Nice, late winter run" (about: 2007)

| 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Pros: Different colored bibs helped differentiate the marathoners from the half-marathoners from the relayers. Off-season hotel rates were cheap. If you were staying in town after the race, most of the hotels along the ocean near 21st were within walking distance of the start line. Nice expo. Cons: Parking was a mess since you couldn't get there on 21st from the east so us out-of-towners had to try to find our way around and come in from the west. It would have been a much nicer view if the buildings along the ocean were gone. I bet this place is a madhouse during peak season.

"Not Coming Back" (about: 2007)
11-50 previous marathons
| 4-5 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I ran this race in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2007. Somehow, I think there's a mental block in the last 9 miles of this race for me. But it also has to do with the crowds and course. Miles 15-19 are pretty desolate and then you run along a busy road for 21-24. My biggest complaint this year were the MILE MARKERS though!! Unless I ran a 9:00, 6:00, 5:00, and 11:00 first 4 miles, I think the markers were just a TAD off! Good volunteers. Flat course. Can get windy. This year, started off at 29 degrees, but 50 by finish.

"Could be better..." (about: 2007)

| 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 The idea of running a marathon in Myrtle Beach sounds great: running along the ocean, great view, etc. However, there wasn't much of an ocean view with this course. The start of the race was ridiculous. I was in the 3:10 pace group and there were a good 100-200 people in front of us. My chip time was over a minute quicker than my gun time. This problem needs to be fixed. (The 3:10 pacers finished with a time of 3:14 by the way.) The weather could not have been more ideal. The medals and t-shirts are exellent and the post-race party was, by far, the most attended post-race party I've ever been to. Free beer and free food: doesn't get much better than that. The volunteers were great, but overall this marathon has too much potential to be as average as it was.

"Great race improves!" (about: 2007)

| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is my second year running the Myrtle Beach Marathon. It was a great race last year, but there were a few minor wrinkles (as you can tell from last year's comments). Well, this year they managed to iron out those details to make the race experience even better. The executive director even responded to my emailed question within hours. The volunteers are awesome (it is rare to see such enthusiastic volunteers). And the course is ideal for a PR or BQ (not to mention beautiful)! |
