"It lives up to its motto: flat, fast, and fun!" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I would agree with several of the other comments made earlier. The course is flat, and having to run several streets two or three times is a bit redundant. Running down Ocean Blvd. is a bit of a disappointment because the condos block the view of the beach. But, overall the race is a good one to run. The volunteers did all they could to make us feel welcome. They were wonderful ambassadors for their community. I thought the expo and the finisher's medal were good. The only thing I would recommend to improve on is the number of porta-pots at the beginning. I stood in line for the toilet for over 20 minutes, and just barely made it to the start line in time.

"BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (about: 2005)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 The course was flat and fast, but very boring and dangerous. The start was a bit crowded (no problem, I've seen worse). Were there pre-race ceremonies?? I didn't hear of any, and I didn't hear runner commands or a gun. Why a 6:30 start?? At least we had perfect running weather!!!

"Much Better This Year!" (about: 2006)
6-10 previous marathons
| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I ran this course last year and other than being really cold the one thing that stuck in my mind was the disaster package pick-up and expo. The new location (Marriott Grande Dunes Resort) was soooo nice! Ample parking, elbow room to enjoy the expo, and much better attitudes from the event staff. Hats off to all the police officers and volunteers who did a great job managing traffic. Many of them were clapping and giving encouragement to the runners. The medical staff was much more visible this year as well, especially after mile 20. Seemed like they were everywhere checking on cramped up runners. Well done! Lastly for the ladies - there were plenty of porta-johns along the course! Yippee!! If you want a flat, fast, qualifying course, Myrtle Beach is perhaps the best in the Carolina region.

"Agree with much of what's been said below" (about: 2006)
4-5 previous marathons
| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I ran this marathon in 1998 and again this year. This isn't on par with any of the "big name" marathons, sure, but it's a nice one to run, especially if you are from the Southeast USA. Volunteers are fantastic - very friendly and encouraging. Not a ton of spectators (many more than 1998) but they make up for their lack of number with enthusiasm. All of the on-track personnel (policemen, volunteers, etc.) were incredibly encouraging, especially during the last 5 miles or so. Also, the community really gets into the marathon. I did not make the pre-race pasta dinner, but ate at a local Italian restaurant where the wait staff all came over to wish me luck in the race. Also, my hotel started breakfast at 4:00 a.m. to accommodate runners, which was very nice. My family really enjoyed the "race" atmosphere prior to the running of the race. While the course is not all that exciting, it's not as bad as it has been made out to be below. A plus, the "turn-arounds" at mile 19/20 and 25 have been eliminated, which is nice. I really hate those. Course is flat, but there are a couple of long inclines and the wind coming off of the ocean can be brisk, so be prepared for that. From a negative standpoint, the start has to be improved. The Grissom Parkway (a four-lane road consisting of two lanes on each side separated by a grass median) is WAY too narrow. It was impossible to get any type of pace going for the first 3/4 mile. Also, having water stations at mile markers made it somewhat difficult to see them. I know I missed a couple of mile markers this way. Also, there were a couple of mile markers that were not accurate - either they had been placed incorrectly to begin with or they were tampered with. I know the mile 17 marker was not right and there was another one during the first 13.1 miles that I cannot remember right now. Overall, this is a great marathon. The community really embraces it and that's really nice.

"Fast, fun course!!!!" (about: 2006)
6-10 previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I don't understand negative comments about this race. The course was flat and fast and the weather was perfect. People always find something to complain about, and as of yet I don't think any race has been billed as the perfect race. That being said, I had a great time at this race. Of course I could find little things here and there that weren't perfect, but so what? I try to focus on the fact that I am fortunate and blessed to be able to even run a marathon, and to nitpick the race to death does nothing to show my gratitude. In short, had a GREAT time and will be back!!

"Fun event" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I ran the half marathon. I have read all the negative comments. Hey, this was a fun event in a fun town. They had plenty of BEER at the expo and at the finish line - what more can you ask for? I will be back next year.

"Flat, but challenging" (about: 2006)
3 previous marathons
| 2 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I find some of the comments concerning the Myrtle Beach Marathon a little harsh. I have run the full marathon the past two years, but chose to run the half this year. The roads are slanted in places, but you can find a flat line at nearly all points. I paid close attention to the slant because I have a sore knee from running on a slanted road. A slight move to the right or left helped me (just paying attention). The volunteers are incredible - period. I am not a fan of PowerAde, but I just take a water and a PowerAde, and dilute the latter. It can be frustrating watching the half marathoners peel off, but this happens almost everywhere now. The growth in distance running is at the half-marathon level, so those of us who run the distance better get used to it. If you are running 26.2 miles, be a little resourceful!! I have had an overall positive experience at MB the last three years.

"Great course, volunteers were awesome!" (about: 2006)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The weather turned out to be great, allowing us to enjoy the nice course. Volunteers were outstanding and very encouraging - especially in the last few miles when encouragement was really needed. I have to echo the other comments about the fruit punch PowerAde. I was totally unprepared and unpleasantly surprised by the punch flavor, which makes me sick. Fortunately it wasn't too hot and I ended up not needing the extra electrolytes. Also, it would have been nice to have Mylar blankets, since the temperature dropped right before I finished and I shivered while waiting for the shuttle. I have to add that it would have been nice to have some info about the baggage drop in the race packet - I was unaware there was a baggage drop until arriving at the race. Other than those details, the race was great - good day and course for a PR!

"Getting better all the time" (about: 2006)
6-10 previous marathons
| 3 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 This is my third MBM. I was not crazy about the start because it seemed a little crowded for a 1/2 mile at the start (especially if you start in the middle of the pack). I think that the water stations were fine and the volunteers were very enthusiastic. The trip on Highway 17 seemed a bit long especially when you hear that 2 runners were bumped by cars on that major highway. I am from S.C. and can tell you that the drivers are not always the most attentive people you will meet. I think you need a bigger room for the number pick-up. It took about 15 minutes to get into the room where you pick up the numbers. Granted, it was Friday evening, but I though you would anticipate a large crowd at that time. All in all a good run and a fun time.

"Much better expo but start still needs work" (about: 2006)
11-50 previous marathons
| 3 Myrtle Beach Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Despite the usual pre-race weather jitters, we had a pretty nice day for running. The temps were again nearly ideal, but this year we had some wind on the course. The wind was nothing like 2004, but it was enough to wear on you nonetheless. I still think you can't beat this race for a good, quick spring marathon. Everything at MB is geared towards the beach season, so prices were extremely reasonable. It was apparent that the RD tried to fix the start this year (new location), but it still clearly needs work. I think they need to do something to organize the starting area better. They can leave the start on Grissom Parkway if they want but they need to put some kind of pace signs up so people will line up at the right spot. The new expo location (Marriot?) was a great change. The expo was much better this year because they had more space. |
